This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection ofquantum optics, integrated photonics, nanofabrication, and quantum information sciencewhile contributing directly to the engineering of scalable photonic quantum hardware.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and simulate photonic quantum processor components and integrated photonic circuits.
  • Characterize PICs using optical instrumentation (lasers, OSAs, SPADs, power meters).
  • Set up and perform quantum optical experiments (single-photon, entanglement, interferometry).
  • Assist in fabrication workflows: mask design, layout validation, and device testing.
  • Integrate photonic chips with fiber arrays, free-space optics, and electronic control systems.
  • Automate measurement routines using Python/MATLAB.
  • Document designs, experiments, and test results for team-wide collaboration.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Quantum Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of integrated photonics and quantum optical devices.
  • Hands-on experience with optical laboratories, fiber coupling, alignment, and optical instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of quantum optics fundamentals: photon statistics, entanglement, interferometry.
  • Proficiency with laboratory tools: optical spectrum analyzers, tunable lasers, power meters, SPADs, oscilloscopes.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Required Skills

  • Photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design on platforms like Silicon Photonics, Silicon Nitride, or Lithium Niobate.
  • Experience with quantum photonic components: MZIs, directional couplers, ring resonators, phase shifters.
  • Single-photon source and detector experience (SPDC, SNSPDs, APDs).
  • Fiber-to-chip and chip-to-chip coupling techniques (grating couplers, edge coupling).
  • Free-space optical setups using lenses, mirrors, beam splitters, and polarization optics.
  • Proficiency in Lumerical (FDTD/INTERCONNECT), COMSOL Multiphysics, or Ansys HFSS.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic modeling, modal analysis, and device optimization.
  • Familiarity with FPGA-based control for optical modulators or photonic switches.
  • Hardware control scripting using Python, MATLAB, or C++.
  • Experience with quantum software frameworks (Qiskit, Cirq, QuTiP).
  • Ability to work closely with system architects, software engineers, device physicists, and fabrication teams.
  • Strong documentation skills for reproducible research and cross-team collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building photonic quantum gates or linear optical quantum computing systems.
  • Hands-on knowledge of integrated optical packaging and bonding techniques.
  • Background in quantum communications, quantum sensing, or quantum photonic chips.
  • Prior experience in fast-paced research labs, semiconductor fabs, or quantum startups.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to work on next-generation photonic quantum processors.
  • A collaborative environment with experts in photonics, quantum physics, and advanced engineering.
  • Competitive compensation and growth opportunities in a high-impact, emerging industry.
