About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer
In this role, you will:
- Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups
- Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking
- Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions
- Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions
- Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and new technologies and recommends innovations that enhance operations or provide a competitive advantage to the organization
- Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
Desired Qualifications:
7+ years of experience in programming using COBOL, JCL, IMS, DB2, VSAM & Z/OS Connect
4+ years of experience in HOGAN, preferably in IDS
Good working experience on mainframe utilities like sort, REXX, fileaid, endeavor/changeman easytrieve
Good working experience on debugging tools like Xpediter, abend aid.
Experience working with Agile/Scrum method and exposure to latest tools like zUnit, Git, SonarQube, Checkmarx etc. is preferred
Good experience in leading small to medium project by providing technical leadership.
Job Expectations:
- Technical Strategy & Delivery Oversight
- Drive the end-to-end execution of modernization journeys—breaking monoliths into microservices, migrating databases, and re-architecting for the cloud.
- Shape the platform engineering roadmap in collaboration with enterprise architecture, product, and infrastructure teams.
- Lead adoption of AI, GenAI, and intelligent automation to accelerate platform discovery, design, development, and testing.
- Team Leadership & Talent Development
- Manage and mentor a team of engineers, staff/principal engineers, and tech leads to foster technical mastery and engineering excellence.
- Build a high-performing team culture focused on continuous learning, innovation, and outcome-driven delivery.
- Align resourcing and skill development strategies with platform goals and evolving technology trends.
- Resiliency & Reliability Leadership
- Embed SRE principles across engineering teams with a focus on platform observability, operational readiness, and resiliency by design.
- Partner with site reliability engineering, infrastructure, and cyber teams to define and enforce SLAs/SLOs and conduct failure mode analysis.
- Stakeholder Partnership & Governance
- Act as the key technology partner for product, business, and architecture stakeholders.
- Translate business needs into scalable, modern technical solutions while balancing risk, compliance, and security requirements.
- Report modernization progress, engineering KPIs, and platform readiness to senior technology leadership.
