Mechanical Designer - BESS

Job Summary :

To lead the mechanical engineering and localization of a 5 MWh containerized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in India, ensuring seamless adaptation of transferred designs into manufacturable, compliant, and cost-optimized solutions. The role is responsible for structural integrity, thermal management, and integration of battery packs and auxiliary systems, while aligning with Indian standards, regulatory requirements, and operational conditions.

The position will drive end-to-end mechanical design ownershipfrom design validation and localization to certification support and production readinessenabling reliable, scalable, and competitive BESS deployment for C&I and utility applications.

Roles & Responsibilities:

1. Mechanical Design & Localization

• Lead localization of the 5 MWh (20 ft containerized) BESS design received under technology transfer.
• Adapt mechanical designs (2D drawings, 3D models, STP files) for Indian manufacturing capabilities, supply chain, and cost optimization.
• Ensure design standardization and modularity for scalable production.

2. Structural Engineering

• Validate and optimize structural design of container, battery racks, and internal assemblies for static and dynamic loads.
• Perform/oversee structural analysis (seismic, wind, transportation loads, lifting conditions).
• Ensure compliance with relevant Indian and international codes/standards.

3. Thermal Management

• Design and optimize thermal management systems (air/liquid cooling) for battery packs and container environment.
• Conduct thermal simulations and validate performance under Indian ambient conditions (high temperature, dust, humidity).
• Ensure uniform temperature distribution and system reliability.

4. System Integration (Mechanical Scope)

• Integrate battery packs, PCS, HVAC, fire protection, and auxiliary systems within the container.
• Define layout, clearances, serviceability, and maintainability considerations.
• Coordinate closely with electrical, BMS, and EMS teams for interface alignment.

5. Certification & Compliance

• Drive compliance with applicable standards (BIS, IEC, UL, NFPA, etc.) for BESS systems.
• Support type testing, certification, and regulatory approvals.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation required for audits and customer approvals.

6. Manufacturing & Vendor Development

• Work with Indian vendors for fabrication of enclosures, racks, and mechanical components.
• Evaluate vendor capabilities and support tooling, jigs, and production readiness.
• Drive cost reduction through design optimization and localization.

7. Testing & Validation

• Define mechanical validation plans including environmental, ingress protection (IP), vibration, and thermal testing.
• Support FAT, SAT, and field validation activities.
• Troubleshoot and resolve design or integration issues during testing and deployment.

8. Project Execution & Cross-functional Coordination

• Collaborate with global technology partner for design clarifications and updates.
• Work with cross-functional teams (engineering, sourcing, quality, projects) to ensure timely execution.
• Track deliverables, milestones, and risks associated with mechanical scope.

9. Documentation & Continuous Improvement

• Maintain complete design documentation, BOMs, and revision control.
• Capture learnings from field feedback and drive continuous product improvement.
• Support development of internal design standards and best practices for BESS.
