Manufacturing Engineer Manager – Test Engineering

Primary Location: Decatur, IL
Travel: Up to 10%

At Caterpillar’s Decatur, IL facility, we manufacture and assemble Large Mining Equipment. As a Manufacturing Engineering Manager - Test Engineering, you will lead team supporting operations and manufacturing processes, test system development, in-process validation, and equipment needed to successfully and economically produce assigned parts/products in accordance with engineering specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Overseeing manufacturing engineering teams and developing/training the personnel that perform and support the plant operating functions.
  • Leading test system hardware and software development, post assembly processes, manufacturing processing, cost estimating and capital forecasting/execution, layout, standards, etc.
  • Managing development, implementation and continual improvement of the operating methods, equipment, systems and other operating infrastructure used to realize operating goals and objectives.
  • Leading the installation of new machines and equipment and process changes to provide the most efficient and economical manufacture or assembly of quality parts.

Required Skills

  • Manufacturing process leadership: Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, including documenting standards, monitoring/control methods, and integrating new technologies into existing processes.
  • Lean manufacturing: Working knowledge of lean philosophy and implementation, including measurement, assessment, and practical application to improve flow and reduce waste.
  • Capacity planning & management (manufacturing): Ability to interpret forecasts, develop short‑term capacity requirements, and provide reports on actual/projected capacity needs.
  • Problem solving & critical thinking: Ability to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and reach productive decisions using fact‑finding and diagnostic tools.
  • People leadership / performance management: Ability to strengthen performance through goals, feedback, development actions (training, shadowing, assignments), and recognition.

Education: Degree or equivalent experience desired.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience troubleshooting prime product and lower power train systems.
  • Previous experience with test systems and in-process validation
  • Demonstrated success leading tooling and equipment improvements that increased throughput, quality, safety, or cost performance.
  • Experience installing/commissioning new machines and implementing process changes in a high‑mix, high‑complexity manufacturing environment.
  • Strong capability in plant layout, standards development, and systems planning tied to measurable manufacturing outcomes.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain continuous improvement culture through coaching, metrics, and structured routines.

 

 

Summary Pay Range:

$112,710.00 - $169,060.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
