Job Description:
Hitachi Rail is looking for a highly skilled Interface Engineer to bridge the critical gap between Design and Construction for a major rail infrastructure project. The position is based in Oakland, California.
Position Summary
The Interface Engineer will work closely with the Deployment/Construction team, the installer, and design engineers to ensure seamless interpretation and execution of design documents on site. This position requires extensive presence in the field, predominantly during night work windows, to support real-time decision-making and maintain construction progress.
Key Responsibilities
Design–Construction Coordination:
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Design team and Construction field teams.
- Take ownership of Design Document reviews, assessing constructability in coordination with the installer, prior to installation activities.
- Lead and participate in advance site walks to review construction readiness, clarify design intent, and minimize RFIs.
Field Engineering & Issue Resolution:
- Proactively identify and resolve design issues in the field, providing on-the-spot clarifications to avoid project delays.
- Make minor design decisions on site, as allowed, to address differing site conditions—with designer support when required.
- Conduct prompt site visits to assess RFI content, ensuring timely and accurate responses to the installer.
Interface Management:
- Manage coordination and site activities related to Class 1 changes (From Fit Function).
- Interface daily with multiple subsystems (DCS, IXL, CBTC, and others) to facilitate decisions needed for construction continuity.
- Maintain accurate documentation and communication trails to ensure full alignment between field activities, design updates, and project controls
Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years of relevant experience in rail, transit, transportation, or large infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience working on construction sites, preferably with night shift exposure.
- Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- Experience coordinating across design, construction, and inspection teams.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills with the ability to make sound engineering decisions under pressure.
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with railway or transportation systems (e.g., Signaling, CBTC, IXL, DCS).
- Previous work with public agencies.
- Knowledge of configuration management processes and change control.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification.
- Experience with constructability reviews and design–build project environments.
Work Environment & Schedule:
- Significant on‑site presence required, often during overnight construction shifts.
- Field‑based role supporting real-time construction activities.
- Occasional weekend or extended-hour support based on project needs.
