Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.
The Control Systems Engineer – EH Braking Systems is responsible for the design, development, and validation of advanced electro‑hydraulic braking control systems, including EH brake overlays and brake‑by‑wire architectures. This role provides technical leadership in developing scalable, safety‑compliant braking software and controls that enable advanced machine features, automation, and autonomy across multiple platforms. The position works closely with brake mechatronics, hydraulic system design, machine systems software, and functional safety teams to define robust braking architectures and reusable control strategies that meet regulatory, performance, and autonomy requirements.
What You Will Do:
- Development of EH brake and brake‑by‑wire control algorithms, including service brake control, diagnostics, fault handling, and system state management.
- Implement scalable brake control architectures that support multiple machine platforms while allowing platform‑specific variation where required.
- Develop controls to enable advanced braking features such as:
- Anti‑lock braking (ABS)
- Traction control and retarding control
- Hill start and directional shift braking
- Collision avoidance and autonomy‑driven braking requests
- Support brake controls interfaces between machine systems, autonomy/assist features, and brake mechatronics, ensuring consistent and well‑documented interfaces.
- Provide support for functional safety‑related braking software, including support of ISO 19014, ISO 13849, and ISO 3450 requirements.
- Collaborate with hydraulic, electrical, and hardware teams on valve selection, redundancy concepts, ECM allocation, and diagnostic coverage.
- Support system integration, machine validation, and issue resolution for EH brake systems in development and production.
What You Will Work On:
- Foundational EH brake architectures that enable automation‑ready and autonomy‑ready machines.
- Reusable brake control software that reduces development cost while improving consistency across platforms.
- Advanced braking features that improve machine safety, controllability, and performance for both manned and unmanned operation.
What You Will Have:
- Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.
- Embedded Systems: Knowledge of embedded systems and their applications; ability to develop embedded systems with varying levels of complexity to control the operations of the machine it is embedded within.
- Technical Troubleshooting: Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application or operation.
- Product Development: Knowledge of methodologies, tools and techniques of product development; ability to design, build new products.
- Product Testing: Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.
- Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
Top Candidates Will Have:
- Advanced degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience in embedded control systems development, preferably for mobile equipment, automotive, or off‑highway applications.
- Strong background in control theory and real‑time embedded software development.
- Experience developing controls for hydraulic or electro‑hydraulic systems.
- Proven experience working with functional safety‑related control systems or safety‑critical software.
- Ability to work across disciplines and communicate effectively with software, hardware, and systems engineering teams.
- Experience with EH braking systems, brake‑by‑wire architectures, or service brake controls.
- Experience with model‑based design tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink) and embedded C/C++ development. Knowledge of diagnostics, fault detection, redundancy management, and degraded‑mode operation for safety‑critical systems.
- Experience on complex control systems.
