Windows Server Engineer

Senior Server Administrator 

A Senior Server Administrator in a healthcare environment is responsible for maintaining a robust, secure, and compliant server infrastructure. This role oversees critical systems including identity management (Active Directory/ADFS/Entra Connect), virtualization (VMware), cloud services (Microsoft 365), data backup (Veeam), and security platforms (Sophos Central).

The administrator ensures high availability and performance of these systems while safeguarding sensitive patient data and meeting strict healthcare regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

Identity and Access Management

• Manage Active Directory domain services and ADFS.
• Maintain domain controllers, authentication systems, and single sign-on configurations.
• Enforce account security policies and access controls.

Server Infrastructure & Virtualization

• Oversee Windows Server infrastructure and VMware virtualization platforms.
• Provision and configure servers, manage vSphere hosts and clusters.
• Monitor performance and conduct capacity planning and upgrades.

Backup and Disaster Recovery

• Implement and manage Veeam Backup & Replication.
• Monitor backup jobs and perform regular disaster recovery drills.
• Document recovery procedures and ensure compliance with retention policies.

Microsoft 365 & Cloud Services

• Administer Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive.
• Manage user accounts, licenses, and permissions.
• Integrate M365 with on-premises Active Directory via ADFS or Azure AD Connect.

Security & Endpoint Protection

• Manage Sophos Central for endpoint protection and antivirus policies.
• Monitor security alerts and logs to detect and respond to threats.
• Enforce patching and system hardening practices.

Patching & System Maintenance

• Lead patch management for servers and critical systems.
• Apply OS updates, security patches, and firmware upgrades.
• Perform routine maintenance and system tuning.

Strategic Planning & Leadership

• Evaluate emerging technologies and plan infrastructure enhancements.
• Collaborate with IT and stakeholders on strategic initiatives.

Incident and Change management

• Monitor and prioritize incoming tickets in the IT Service Management (ITSM) tool.
• Categorize, assign, and update tickets based on severity and impact.
• Ensure all tickets are documented with clear details and resolution steps.

Experience

5–12 years in server administration.

Experience in healthcare or regulated industries preferred.

Technical Skills

• Windows Server OS and Active Directory administration.
• ADFS and federated identity management.
• VMware vSphere configuration and maintenance.
• Microsoft 365 administration and hybrid environments.
• Veeam backup and recovery.
• Sophos Central endpoint protection.
• PowerShell scripting and automation.
• Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, VPNs).
