Job Description

Network Switching Role Overview

The Networking Switching SME (Discovery & Design) leads discovery assessments and architects campus, data center, and branch switching solutions. This role defines standards, segmentation models, resiliency, and automation strategies across wired infrastructure, ensuring secure, scalable, and highperformance connectivity aligned with business and compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Discovery

• Facilitate workshops to capture business drivers, application flows, compliance needs, and operational constraints.
• Inventory switching estate: models, OS/firmware, topology, VLANs, Layer2 protocols (STP/RSTP/MST ), Layer3 features (HSRP/VRRP/GLBP ), routing (OSPF/BGP ), QoS, ACLs, and monitoring.
• Baseline performance & capacity: link utilization, microbursts, buffer drops, latency, packet loss; identify points of failure.
• Assess NAC & segmentation (VLANs, VRFs ) and edge authentication (802.1X/MAB ) with RADIUS/TACACS .
• Review config hygiene: naming standards, NTP/SNMP/syslog, AAA, templates, and backup/restore processes.

Architecture & Design

• Create targetstate architectures for campus, branch, and data center switching (Layer2/Layer3 and fabric designs).
• Design segmentation: VLAN/VRF models, SGT/MACsec options, and policybased access for users/IoT/OT.
• Define resiliency & convergence: STP enhancements, MLAG/StackWise/VSS , ECMP, and fastreroute.
• Plan IP addressing, DHCP, DNS integrations; design L3 gateway placement and firsthop redundancy.
• Develop QoS strategy for voice/video/industrial traffic: classification, marking, queueing policies.
• Establish automation & assurance: config templates, golden images, NetConf/REST/Ansible/Terraform , compliance checks.
• Integrate with NAC (e.g., 802.1X), SIEM, NPM/NTA tools, and ITSM workflows.
• Produce HLD/LLD, BOM, capacity/sizing, and migration plans with rollback.

Security & Compliance

• Embed Zero Trust principles at the access/edge; enforce portlevel security, dynamic VLANs, and posture checks.
• Harden switch configurations: secure management (SSH, SNMPv3 ), control plane policing, storm control, DHCP snooping , IP Source Guard , Dynamic ARP Inspection .
• Define logging, telemetry, and audit trails; align with regulatory needs (e.g., ISO 27001 ).

Governance & Documentation

• Publish standards: naming, VLAN/VRF allocation, QoS profiles, firmware lifecycle.
• Create operational runbooks, SOPs, acceptance criteria; define change control requirements.
• Establish metrics & SLAs for availability, performance, and incident response.

Collaboration & Enablement

• Work with EUC, server, security, and application teams to map flows and validate designs.
• Provide design reviews, implementation guidance, and knowledge transfer to NOC/operations.
• Support pilots, cutovers, hypercare; refine designs from operational feedback.

Required Qualifications

• 710+ years in enterprise switching across campus/data center/branch environments.
• Expertise in L2/L3 protocols: STP/RSTP/MST , LACP , HSRP/VRRP/GLBP , OSPF/BGP .
• Handson with switch stacks/chassis, MLAG/VSS/StackWise , QoS, ACLs, multicast.
• Experience with NAC/802.1X, RADIUS/TACACS , and switch hardening (DHCP snooping, DAI, IP Source Guard).
• Proven ability to produce HLD/LLD , templates, migration runbooks, and automation scripts (Ansible/Terraform ).
• Strong troubleshooting using packet captures, flow telemetry, and NPM/NTA tools.
• Excellent communication, documentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Vendor certifications (e.g., CCNP/CCIE Enterprise , Aruba Professional/Expert , Juniper JNCIP/JNCIE ).
• Experience with SDAccess/EVPNVXLAN fabrics and automation frameworks.
• Exposure to OT/industrial networks and segmentation for manufacturing environments.
• Familiarity with NetConf/YANG , gNMI/telemetry , and intentbased networking tools.
