Job Description
Position Overview:
The Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Mathematics will develop engaging and comprehensive lesson plans and instructional materials for Grades 6 to 8 of the US curriculum. This role requires a strong understanding of mathematical concepts, educational standards, and effective pedagogical strategies to support student learning and achievement.
Topics Covered:
Grade 6
- Ratios and Proportional Relationships: Using ratio language, finding unit rates, and solving real-world problems with ratios and percentages.
- The Number System: Dividing fractions by fractions, fluently performing all operations with multi-digit decimals, and working with positive and negative integers.
- Expressions and Equations: Reading, writing, and evaluating algebraic expressions. Solving one-variable equations and inequalities.
- Geometry: Finding the area of polygons, volume of rectangular prisms, and drawing polygons on a coordinate plane.
- Statistics and Probability: Displaying data using plots and understanding measures of center (mean, median) and variability (range).
Grade 7
- Proportional Relationships: Identifying and representing proportional relationships in tables, graphs, and equations. Solving problems involving rates, percentages, and scale factors.
- Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities: Simplifying complex algebraic expressions and solving multi-step, one-variable equations and inequalities.
- Geometry: Working with area and circumference of circles, surface area and volume of 3D objects, and drawing geometric shapes with given conditions.
- Statistics and Probability: Analyzing data, drawing informal inferences about populations, and investigating chance processes through probability models.
Grade 8
- Functions: Defining, evaluating, and comparing functions. Interpreting functions from graphs, tables, and equations.
- Geometry: Applying the Pythagorean theorem and understanding geometric transformations such as reflections, rotations, translations, and dilations.
- Volume: Solving problems involving the volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres.
- Statistics: Investigating patterns of association in bivariate data using scatter plots and two-way tables.
- Systems of Equations: Solving systems of linear equations and inequalities using multiple methods.
Key Responsibilities:
- Subject Matter Expertise:
- Conduct in-depth research on mathematical concepts relevant to Grades 6 to 9, including algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability.
- Stay informed about current educational trends and best practices in mathematics instruction.
- Instructional Design and Development:
- Create detailed lesson plans that align with curriculum standards and learning objectives.
- Develop assessments and evaluation tools to measure student understanding and progress.
- Design supplementary materials, such as interactive activities and digital resources, to enhance the learning experience.
- Collaboration and Feedback:
- Collaborate with curriculum developers, educators, and stakeholders to ensure alignment with educational goals.
- Incorporate feedback from peer reviews and pilot testing to refine lesson plans and instructional materials.
- Participate in virtual collaboration sessions with the LearningMate team to discuss progress and share insights.
Qualifications:
- Required:
- Bachelors degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field.
- Proven experience in curriculum development and lesson planning for mathematics.
- Strong knowledge of mathematical concepts and their application in the classroom.
- Experience teaching mathematics at the middle school level (Grades 6 to 9).
- Must be comfortable working with AI Tools, and should be open to work on Articulate Rise (training will be provided).
- Preferred:
- Masters degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field.
- Familiarity with digital learning platforms and instructional technology.
