Job Description
About Us
Join a team that is redefining the accessibility of space. Azista space is a transformative force in the global aerospace sector, uniquely positioned at the intersection of indigenous innovation and industrial scalability. Operating Indias first private-sector satellite mass-production facility in Ahmedabad, we have bridged the gap between complex engineering and high-volume manufacturing.
As a vertically integrated leader, we provide end-to-end solutions from the precision design of satellite buses and advanced payloads to mission management and communication systems. We dont just build hardware, we are democratizing the final frontier by providing global clientele with the cost-effective, high-performance technology needed to power the next generation of orbital missions. At Azista, you won't just be starting a job, youll be fuelling the future of space exploration.
Role Overview:
Azista Space is seeking a Systems Engineer (Optics) to support the design, integration, calibration, and system-level engineering of space-borne electro-optical payloads for satellite missions.
This role involves optical system design, radiometric analysis, opto-mechanical integration, performance budgeting, and AIT support for high-performance Earth Observation and space imaging payloads. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in optical engineering, remote sensing systems, radiometry, and space-grade payload development.
You will work cross-functionally with payload, mechanical, electronics, AIT, and mission teams to deliver flight-ready optical systems.
Responsibilities:
Optical System Engineering
- Design, alignment, integration, and validation of space-qualified optical systems and electro-optical payloads
- Perform radiometric analysis, optical throughput calculations, SNR modeling, MTF analysis
- Support development of optical architecture and conceptual payload configurations
- Perform optical performance budgeting (radiometric, geometric, spectral, stray light)
- Conduct tolerance analysis and alignment sensitivity analysis
Integration & Testing (AIT)
- Support Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) of optical payloads.
- Lead/assist in optical alignment procedures (collimators, interferometers, alignment telescopes).
- Support payload-level calibration (radiometric, geometric, spectral calibration).
- Assist in environmental testing (TVAC, vibration, shock testing support)
System Engineering & Documentation
- Interpret system-level requirements and derive subsystem requirements.
- Support interface definition (mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical interfaces).
- Participate in PDR, CDR, TRR, FRR design reviews.
- Prepare technical documentation:
- Requirements documents
- Test procedures
- Interface control documents (ICDs)
- Performance budgets
Tools & Analysis
- Perform modeling and simulation using:
- Zemax / Code V / OSLO / LightTools / TracePro
- MATLAB / Python (NumPy, SciPy, OpenCV)
- Stray light analysis tools
- GMAT / STK (mission-level understanding)
- Support vendor technical evaluations and specification preparation
Require Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelors or masters degree in engineering physics, Optics & Photonics, Remote Sensing, Aerospace Engineering, Astronomy, or related fields.
- 14 years of experience in optical/electro-optical systems, remote sensing or imaging payloads, opto-mechanical integration/testing; familiarity with Zemax/Code V/OSLO and exposure to satellite AIT or space systems preferred.
- Strong understanding of optical system fundamentals, radiometric concepts (radiance, irradiance, SNR, MTF), optical throughput, imaging chain, and Panchromatic/Multispectral/Hyperspectral systems; familiarity with CMOS/CCD detectors, optical payload lifecycle, and space system interfaces.
- Proficiency in Python/MATLAB (C++ preferred) and optical tools such as Zemax/Code V/OSLO; strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, good communication skills, and exposure to space optical payload testing, calibration, GMAT/STK, ISRO/ESA/NASA standards or academic projects like CANSAT/CubeSat is an added advantage.
Technical Competencies:
Optical & Radiometry
- Radiance, Irradiance, Reflectance, BRDF, Solid Angle, tendue, Optical Throughput, SNR modeling, MTF, Spectral Response, Detector Physics, Optical Performance Budgeting.
Optical Engineering & Analysis
