Job Description: Student Counselor

Position Title: Student Counselor

Department: Student Affairs

Location: RVU, Bangalore


Position Overview

The Student Counselor is responsible for providing professional psychological counseling, emotional support, and guidance to students, ensuring their overall well-being and academic success. The role includes offering one-on-one counseling, crisis intervention, student development initiatives, and collaborating with faculty/staff to create a healthy and supportive campus environment.


Key Responsibilities

1. Counseling & Support

Provide individual counseling sessions to students on academic stress, personal issues, emotional challenges, anxiety, depression, peer/family concerns, and adjustment issues.

Maintain confidential and ethical counseling practices in accordance with professional guidelines.

Offer short-term therapeutic intervention, and refer cases requiring long-term or clinical support to external specialists.

2. Crisis Management

Respond to student emergencies and mental health crises; conduct risk assessments and implement intervention plans.

Work closely with campus security, medical teams, and administration during crisis situations.

3. Student Engagement & Wellness Programs

Plan and conduct workshops, training, and awareness programs on topics such as mental health, stress management, career decision-making, time management, relationships, and emotional resilience.

Support student orientation, induction programs, and peer-mentor initiatives.

4. Collaboration & Campus Outreach

Partner with faculty, residence wardens, and academic advisors to identify students of concern.

Participate in student welfare committees and contribute to policies promoting student well-being.

Build a supportive campus culture by engaging with student clubs, hostels, and academic departments.

5. Documentation & Reporting

Maintain updated counseling records, case notes, and progress reports, while ensuring confidentiality.

Generate periodic reports on trends, student concerns, and wellness indicators for review by leadership.

6. Compliance & Professional Development

Adhere to the ethical standards of counseling psychology.

Stay updated with new practices in student counseling, mental health, and wellness through training and certifications.


Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

Masters Degree in Psychology / Counseling Psychology / Clinical Psychology (M.A./M.Sc.).

Minimum 25 years of experience as a counselor, preferably in higher education or youth-focused organizations.

Strong communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to handle confidential and sensitive issues appropriately.

Preferred:

Certification in Student Counseling, Career Counseling, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, or related areas.

Experience in crisis counseling or supporting residential campus environments.
