Job Description
We're looking for a Staff Backend Engineer who combines deep systems expertise with strong communication and influence. At this level, you'll own cross-cutting technical decisions, mentor senior engineers, and collaborate directly with product and infrastructure leadership to shape a multi-year platform roadmap.
- Architect and lead delivery of high-scale distributed systems (millions of RPS)
- Drive technical strategy across multiple product squads
- Define API contracts, data models, and service boundaries that last
- Lead incident response and post-mortems; own SLA/SLO improvements
- Partner with infra to improve observability, reliability, and cost efficiency
- Sponsor and complete cross-team engineering RFCs
- Grow senior engineers through coaching, design reviews, and pairing
- 8+ years backend experience, 2+ at staff or principal level
- Mastery of at least one strongly-typed language (Java, Python, Node, Go, Rust, C++)
- Deep understanding of distributed systems: consensus, CAP, eventual consistency
- Production experience with large-scale databases (Postgres, Cassandra, Redis)
- Strong track record shipping zero-downtime migrations and refactors
- Ability to write clear engineering proposals that build buy-in
- Experience in on-call rotation ownership and reliability engineering
