Role Overview:

We are seeking a skilled Full Stack Engineer with a focus on Backend for Frontend (BFF) development to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in designing, developing, and maintaining BFF layers that serve as the integration point between frontend applications and our microservice architecture. You will work collaboratively with frontend engineers and backend teams to deliver seamless, optimised API experiences that meet the specific needs of our client applications.

Key Responsibilities

BFF Development

• Design, develop, and maintain Backend for Frontend (BFF) services that aggregate and orchestrate data from multiple microservices
• Create optimised API endpoints tailored to specific frontend application requirements
• Implement data transformation, aggregation, and filtering logic to reduce frontend complexity
• Integrate BFF services with existing Process APIs within our microservice architecture
• Develop efficient API contracts that minimise over-fetching and under-fetching of data
• Implement caching strategies to optimise performance and reduce load on downstream services

API Integration and Microservices

• Integrate with existing Process APIs and domain microservices
• Design and implement service-to-service communication patterns (REST, GraphQL, messaging)
• Handle API versioning, backwards compatibility, and graceful degradation
• Implement circuit breakers, retry logic, and fault tolerance patterns
• Monitor and optimise API performance, latency, and throughput

Security and Quality

• Implement API security measures including JWT authentication, OAuth2, and token validation
• Apply input validation, sanitisation, and security best practices
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following best practices
• Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members
• Develop comprehensive unit and integration tests for BFF services

Collaboration and Delivery

• Collaborate closely with frontend engineers to understand client-specific data requirements
• Work with backend/microservice teams to understand available Process APIs and data contracts
• Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies including daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives
• Support CI/CD pipeline management and deployment processes
• Document API contracts and integration patterns for frontend teams

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
• Equivalent practical experience will be considered

Experience

• Mid-Level: 3-10 years of professional experience in backend or full stack development
• Proven experience working with microservice architectures
• Experience developing BFF or API gateway solutions

Technical Skills

Backend Development

Required:

• Spring Boot (Java)
• RESTful API Design
• Microservices Architecture
• OpenAPI/Swagger contract-first design

Preferred:

• Node.js / NestJS (for prototyping)
• TypeScript

Microservices and Integration

Required:

• Microservice Architecture patterns
• Service-to-service communication
• API Gateway concepts
• Data aggregation and transformation
• Experience with API contract definition (OpenAPI/Swagger)

Preferred:

• Event-driven architecture
• Domain-driven design principles
• API versioning strategies

Database

Required:

• MongoDB / Mongoose
• SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
• Database query optimisation

Preferred:

• Redis (caching)
• Data modelling for BFF layer

DevOps and Tools

Required:

• Git (GitHub)
• JIRA / Azure DevOps
• Postman / API Testing tools
• CI/CD pipelines

Preferred:

• Docker
• Kubernetes
• Azure Services (App Services, API Management, Service Bus)
• Jenkins / Azure Pipelines

Authentication & Security

• JWT authentication, OAuth2, token validation
• Azure AD B2C/B2B integration experience (CRITICAL)
• Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) implementation
• SSO via API Connect or similar enterprise SSO solutions
• Session management with token refresh strategies
• Azure Active Directory experience

Micro-frontend support:

• Experience designing BFF services for micro-frontend architecture
• understanding of module federation
• API composition for distributed front-end teams

Desired Skills and Experience

• Experience with BFF pattern implementation in enterprise environments
• Knowledge of API gateway solutions (Azure API Management, Kong, AWS API Gateway)
• Experience with authentication systems (JWT, OAuth2, SSO, Azure AD)
• Understanding of CQRS and event sourcing patterns
• Experience with distributed tracing and observability (Application Insights, Jaeger)
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and services
• Knowledge of rate limiting, throttling, and API quota management
• Azure certifications are advantageous
