Job Description: Senior Director, Engineering

Position Summary

The Senior Director of Engineering is a senior technical leadership role responsible for defining architectural strategy, leading multiple engineering teams, and delivering cloud-native, highly scalable enterprise platforms. This position requires deep hands-on engineering expertise, strong people leadership, and a proven ability to drive execution across large, complex portfolios. The Senior Director will partner with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure technology solutions meet business objectives for performance, reliability, scalability, and long-term sustainability.


Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Leadership:

  • Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance for the design, development, and deployment of cloud-native, microservices-based platforms.
  • Establish and enforce engineering best practices, coding standards, and architectural principles across teams.
  • Conduct detailed technical reviews of architecture, design, and code to ensure high-quality and scalable solutions.
  • Lead modernization and transformation initiatives, including microservices decomposition, containerization, and event-driven architectures.


Technical Delivery & Execution:

  • Oversee end-to-end delivery of multiple engineering portfolios, ensuring predictable, high-quality output aligned with organizational goals.
  • Partner with Product, Architecture, Program Management, and Operations to define roadmaps, priorities, and delivery plans.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tooling, automation, and operational maturity.
  • Ensure platforms meet defined SLIs/SLOs, performance benchmarks, and compliance/security standards.


People Management & Organizational Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop engineering managers, senior engineers, and architects; cultivate a high-performing engineering culture.
  • Attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent; create clear career paths and development opportunities.
  • Foster collaboration across distributed teams and partner organizations to support shared goals and outcomes.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, ownership, accountability, and continuous learning.


Strategic Leadership:

  • Define long-term technical strategy aligned with organizational and business objectives.
  • Provide thought leadership on emerging technologies, engineering patterns, and industry best practices.
  • Influence senior executives and stakeholders through clear communication of technical concepts, trade-offs, and recommendations.
  • Manage budgets, staffing plans, vendor relationships, and technology investments as needed.


Required Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in senior engineering leadership roles.


Demonstrated hands-on expertise in:

  • Java, microservices, and RESTful API development
  • Event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis)
  • Distributed systems and high-availability design
  • Cloud-native development on AWS or similar cloud platforms
  • CI/CD pipelines, DevOps automation, infrastructure-as-code
  • Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration
  • Proven experience delivering highly scalable, high-volume transactional systems (e.g., commerce, billing, payments, telecom platforms).
  • Strong understanding of modern architectural patterns, system performance tuning, observability, and resiliency engineering.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in telecom, financial services, e-commerce, or other large-scale transactional environments.
  • Background in platform engineering, SRE, or enterprise modernization programs.
  • Experience with globally distributed engineering organizations.
  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
