About the Role

We are hiring an SDET to join the founding quality engineering team of a fast-growing consumer technology startup founded in 2024 (our partner) that is building a platform focused on delivering hyperlocal services with speed and reliability.

The engineering team is building systems from the ground up, and quality engineering will play a critical role in scaling the platform reliably. This role requires someone who is extremely strong in automation and backend testing, with the ability to deeply understand systems and proactively identify gaps.

This is not a routine testing role - the team is looking for engineers who can break systems, challenge assumptions, and build robust automation that enables faster releases.

Core Requirements:

• 4+ years of experience in software testing with strong emphasis on automation.
• Strong hands-on experience in backend testing and automation.
• Expertise in Rest Assured and API automation frameworks.
• Strong programming skills in Java or Python.
• Solid understanding of testing strategies, distributed systems, and backend architectures.
• Strong debugging mindset and ability to analyze failures across multiple services and systems.
• Candidates should be able to clearly demonstrate their automation experience in depth during technical discussions.

Candidate Profile:

• Have stayed long enough in previous organizations to build meaningful system context.

Expected Work Environment for the next 4-5 months:

This role is part of a founding engineering team, and the environment is fast-paced and demanding.

• Work from office - Bengaluru
• 6-day work week
• For the next 45 months, flexibility to work beyond standard hours when required as the team builds core systems and processes.

This role is best suited for individuals who enjoy building from scratch and working in high-ownership startup environments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and scale automation frameworks focused primarily on backend and API testing.
• Develop high-quality automation scripts using Java or Python, following strong coding and OOP principles.
• Build and maintain API automation suites (Rest Assured preferred).
• Ensure deep test coverage across critical backend workflows and services.
• Integrate automation into CI/CD pipelines to enable faster and reliable releases.
• Investigate failures across services, APIs, environments, and data flows, identifying root causes quickly.
• Collaborate closely with engineering teams to improve system testability and reliability.
• Continuously strengthen regression suites and automation stability based on production learnings.

Note: UI automation experience is good to have but not required. The role is heavily backend-focused.
