Our dynamic Agile Team delivers the technology for Elsevier's Submissions unit under Academic & Governance.

About the Role 

As a Senior Software Engineer I, you will build capabilities to support scientific researchers through the process of submitting the research for publication. We are continually evolving our technology in response to researchers’ needs and to the ever-changing technical landscape, including the use of AI technologies.

Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for:

• Designing, developing and deploying applications in a cloud-hosted distributed system to build our next-generation product

• Collaborating with business stakeholders to identify requirements and gather feedback in a fast-moving environment

• Providing input into architectural decisions to ensure stability and performance

• Identifying and implementing enhancements to continually improve our delivery process

• Partnering with cross-functional Agile and DevOps implementation teams

Requirements

• To be successful in this role you will demonstrate proficiency in the some of our requirements, with a willingness to learn new ones as needed.

• Demonstrate some proficiency in most of these technologies; Java, Spring / Spring Boot, a JavaScript / TypeScript tool (React), SQL with a willingness to learn the others.

• Display some experience with build tools, Git and continuous integration (GitHub Actions / Jenkins)

• Enjoy collaborating with team members to create innovative solutions

• Have some experience in supporting and mentoring team members to share knowledge and up-skill team members

• Show some experience with alerting, monitoring and logging tools (NewRelic, OpenSearch / Kibana, Coralogix)

• Have experience with a modern IDE (IntelliJ / VSCode) and proficiency in using the refactoring tools

• Be open to discussing and honing approaches for our team to improve our working practices

• Have some experience of test-driven development and mocking libraries (Jest, Mockito)

• Be familiar with collaborative documentation tools (Jira and Confluence)

• Have some real world experience of Agile practices and execution (Scrum, Kanban)

• Have some familiarity with how to design and develop for cloud environments (i.e. docker, Kubernetes, AWS)

• Wanting to learn or have experience with AI based solutions

• Be eager to learn and grow my skills and experience

• Be aware of industry best practices and standards
