Job Description
We're building something new. From scratch. At speed.
Commotion is launching an entirely new line of work and we need the kind of engineer who lights up when they hear that. Not someone who needs a perfectly scoped ticket to start moving. Someone who can hold ambiguity in one hand and ship production code with the other.
This is a founding-energy role inside an operating company. You'll have real ownership, real autonomy, and real consequences to your decisions. We're not looking for someone who "can" do full stack work. We're looking for someone who has under pressure, with imperfect information, and came out the other side with something that worked.
What the work looks like
You'll be the engine. The person the team turns to when something needs to go from idea to live in days, not quarters. You'll make architectural calls that stick, ship experiments before the spec is "ready," and iterate in tight loops with product and leadership.
But here's the thing you also know that speed without intent is just chaos. You think before you build. You ask the right questions early so you don't have to ask them later. You've learned (probably the hard way) that 30 minutes of upfront thinking saves 3 weeks of rework.
Day to day, you will:
Architect, build, and own full features end-to-end database to UI, deploy to monitor.
Make fast, reversible decisions. And occasionally, fast irreversible ones with good judgment.
Work across the stack in TypeScript React on the front, Node on the back, Postgres and MongoDB underneath.
Prototype rapidly. Kill what doesn't work. Double down on what does.
Operate with extreme ownership. No "that's not my problem." It's all your problem.
Collaborate directly with founders and leadership no layers, no politics, no waiting for permission.
What you bring
5+ years building production software across the full stack.
Deep fluency in TypeScript, React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB not just "familiar with," but built real things with.
A track record of being the go-to person when the team needed something built fast and built right.
Comfort with ambiguity. You've shipped in environments where the map was being drawn while you were already driving.
Strong architectural instincts you know when to reach for the simple solution and when the problem genuinely demands complexity.
The ability to context-switch without losing depth.
What you won't find here
A backlog of perfectly groomed Jira tickets waiting for you.
Three rounds of architecture review before you can write a line of code.
A culture where "that's how we've always done it" is an acceptable answer.
What you will find
A team that moves fast because they trust each other, not because someone is cracking a whip.
Greenfield problems the kind of work most engineers only talk about wanting.
Direct impact. Your code, your decisions, your fingerprints on the product.
A genuine shot at building something that matters, with people who care about getting it right.
This role is for you if
You've been the person who built the first version. The one who got the call at 10 PM because "we need this by tomorrow" and actually delivered. The one who chose boring tech when boring tech was right, and new tech when the problem demanded it. You don't need to be managed. You need to be unleashed.
