About the role
The Senior Ship Digital Twin Modelling Engineer leads the development, integration, and validation of high-fidelity ship digital twin models using Rhinoceros 3D and related platforms. This role drives technical quality, workflow standards, and project delivery, ensuring that 3D models accurately support simulation, condition monitoring, lifecycle management, and retrofit engineering.
Key Responsibilities
Digital Twin Development
- Lead creation of high-accuracy 3D digital twin models of hull, structure, machinery, piping, and outfitting.
- Integrate models with IoT, sensor data, BIM/PLM platforms, and simulation environments.
- Define LOD (Level of Detail), metadata structure, and model workflows for digital twin accuracy and usability.
Data Integration & Advanced Modelling
- Process and integrate laser scan point-clouds, drone scans, and photogrammetry data into Rhino-based models.
- Validate geometry accuracy and create as-built vs as-designed comparisons.
- Ensure compatibility with digital twin ecosystems (Unity, Unreal, Navisworks, Aveva, ShipConstructor, etc.).
Standards, Quality & Governance
- Develop modelling standards, templates, naming conventions, and data taxonomy for digital twin projects.
- Conduct model audits, clash checks, and BIM-style QA/QC reviews.
- Manage version control, documentation, and change tracking across multi-disciplinary teams.
Technical Leadership
- Mentor junior modellers and guide modelling best practices.
- Coordinate with naval architects, IT/IoT teams, software developers, and fleet digitalisation teams.
- Lead technical discussions with shipyards, classification societies, and technology partners.
Innovation & Automation
- Develop automation scripts using Grasshopper/Python to improve modelling and data processing efficiency.
- Push adoption of new tools (point-cloud registration, AI-assisted modelling, cloud platforms).
- Contribute to R&D for digital twins such as predictive maintenance models, structural health monitoring, and energy optimisation.
Qualifications
- Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in 3D ship modelling; 2+ years in digital twin or point-cloud-based modelling.
- Highly proficient in Rhinoceros 3D, including advanced surfacing and complex geometry handling.
- Experience using point-cloud processing tools (Leica Cyclone, Faro Scene, CloudCompare).
- Strong understanding of ship systems, structures, machinery layouts, and classification standards.
- Experience with interoperability platforms (IFC, USD, FBX, STEP, proprietary integration pipelines).
Key Competence
- Strong leadership and mentoring capability.
- Excellent problem-solving for geometric, data, and interoperability challenges.
- Ability to manage multi-stakeholder engineering and digitalisation projects.
