Hiring: Senior Design Engineer Orthopaedic Implants & Surgical Instruments

Location: Vadodara, India

Department: R&D / Design & Development

Reporting To: Head of Design Department / Technical Director

Experience: 36 Years

We are looking for a Senior Design Engineer to design and develop orthopaedic implants, surgical instruments, and instrument systems used in surgical procedures.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of engineering, manufacturing, and clinical application, translating surgeon requirements into precision-engineered medical devices.

You will be involved across the entire product development lifecycle from concept development and CAD design to prototyping, testing, validation, and manufacturing implementation.

This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy complex mechanical design, precision manufacturing, and solving real-world clinical engineering challenges.

Role Overview

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will contribute to the development of high-precision orthopaedic implants and surgical instruments, ensuring designs meet clinical needs, manufacturing feasibility, and regulatory requirements.

You will collaborate closely with manufacturing engineers, CNC programmers, tool room specialists, quality teams, and clinical stakeholders to deliver robust and manufacturable product designs.

Key Responsibilities

1. Product Design & Development

  • Design and develop orthopaedic implants, surgical instruments, and instrument sets in compliance with clinical and regulatory requirements
  • Conduct competitor analysis and worst-case scenario evaluations to ensure product safety and performance
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks, ESPRITCAM, AutoCAD, and 2D drawings
  • Lead concept development, prototyping, testing, and validation phases of product development
  • Ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, durability, and cost efficiency
  • Render CAD models with proper material assignment and incorporate Bone CAD files
  • Perform DICOM file processing and segmentation to create anatomical models for implant and instrumentation design (optional skill)

2. Engineering Analysis & Validation

  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis, and material selection for implants and instruments
  • Support mechanical testing, fatigue analysis, and validation studies
  • Collaborate with the quality team to ensure compliance with ISO 13485, CE MDR, and other regulatory requirements
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with production, VMC/CNC programmers, tool room, and quality teams to ensure smooth transition from design to manufacturing
  • Provide technical support during process development, tooling design, and production troubleshooting
  • Coordinate with marketing and clinical teams to incorporate surgeon feedback and market requirements into product improvements

3. Documentation & Compliance

  • Prepare and maintain design documentation, technical files, and engineering change records
  • Support regulatory submissions and maintain compliance with medical device documentation standards
  • Maintain design control documentation as per quality management system (QMS) guidelines

4. Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for product innovation, cost optimization, and process improvements
  • Stay updated with advancements in orthopaedic technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related field
  • 36 years of experience in product design, preferably in orthopaedic implants, surgical instruments, or medical devices
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience with precision manufacturing processes including CNC machining, milling, turning, and surface finishing
  • Knowledge of orthopaedic implant design principles and materials such as Titanium and Stainless Steel

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485, CE marking, MDR, and other regulatory frameworks
  • Understanding of surgical procedures and implant biomechanics
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills
  • Ability to conduct competitor analysis and worst-case scenario analysis
  • Proficient in CAD modeling and 2D drawing drafting
  • Splicing DICOM files (optional)

Key Competencies
