Job Description
Job Title: Senior Design Engineer Electric Motors (Electromagnetics)
Location: Hyderabad, India
Job Type: Full-Time
About The Role
You will own the electromagnetic architecture of high-performance propulsion systems at Vector Technics. This is a first-principles engineering role focused on pushing the limits of power density, efficiency, and reliability. You are responsible for the full design cyclefrom analytical sizing and JMAG simulations to correlating FEA data with physical dynamometer results. You will work at the intersection of electromagnetic physics, high-frequency power electronics, and advanced manufacturing.
Core Responsibilities
- Electromagnetic Design: Design and optimize BLDC and PMSM topologies (Radial and Axial Flux) for UAV and robotic applications.
- High-Speed Simulation: Use JMAG-Designer to execute transient 2D/3D magnetic field analysis, accounting for high-frequency switching losses and non-linear magnetic saturation.
- Optimization: Perform multi-objective optimization for torque ripple reduction, cogging torque minimization, and maximizing the efficiency map (Torque-Speed-Efficiency).
- Material Strategy: Select and validate core materials (electrical steel, SMC) and high-grade permanent magnets based on B-H curves, temperature coefficients, and eddy current loss profiles.
- Thermal-Magnetic Coupling: Collaborate with mechanical engineers to evaluate thermal demagnetization risks and loss-dependent heat generation.
- Manufacturing Handover: Define winding schemes (Concentrated vs. Distributed), slot-pole combinations, and tolerances for production-ready designs.
Technical Requirements
- Topologies: Proven expertise in Internal Permanent Magnet (IPM) and Surface Permanent Magnet (SPM) motors. Experience with Axial Flux (pancake) architectures is highly preferred.
- Software Proficiency: Power-user level in JMAG (Efficiency Map, JMAG-RT, and Transient solvers). Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink for co-simulation is a plus.
- High-Speed Mastery: Deep understanding of the physics of high-speed rotation (10k-30k+ RPM), specifically iron loss segregation and centrifugal stress impacts on magnetic gaps.
- Demonstrates the ability to independently perform DL sizing and detailed magnetic circuit calculations manually prior to initiating FEA, ensuring strong theoretical validation before simulation.
- Testing: Experience with dynamometer testing, back-EMF validation, and interpreting EOL (End of Line) test data.
Additional Requirements
Education:
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Masters degree with specialization in Electromagnetics or Electric Machines preferred.
Experience:
- 5 to 10 years of hands-on experience in electric motor electromagnetic design.
- Prior experience in UAV propulsion, EV traction motors, aerospace systems, or high-speed industrial drives preferred.
Reporting Structure:
- Reports to: Head of Engineering / CTO
- Works closely with: Power Electronics, Mechanical Design, Thermal Engineering, and Manufacturing teams.
Location & Work Model:
- Based in Hyderabad, India.
- On-site role due to close collaboration with testing and manufacturing teams.
