Opto-Mechanical Engineer

SpaceRelays is an early-stage startup building next-generation high-speed communication systems using free-space optical communication technology. We build precision optical, opto-mechanical, and electro-mechanical hardware that enables stable and reliable laser communication systems.

We are looking for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer at a Founding Engineer level to take ownership of the design and realization of our optical and mechanical hardware from the ground up. This is an opportunity to join at an early stage, influence core product decisions, and help define the companys technical direction.

Compensation up to 15 LPA (fixed + ESOPs) for strong and deserving profiles.

Final offer will be based on demonstrated technical capability, relevant experience, and overall role fit.

We are looking for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer who can independently design, develop, and validate precision hardware for optical communication systems.

This role involves working across both opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, taking ownership from concept design through prototyping, integration, and testing.

You will collaborate closely with optics, electronics, and systems engineers to translate performance requirements into robust physical hardware.

• Design and develop precision opto-mechanical assemblies and electro-mechanical subsystems
• Translate optical and system-level requirements into stable, manufacturable mechanical designs
• Perform tolerance stack-up and stability-driven design
• Conduct classical mechanical calculations and structural/thermal FEA
• Design for vibration, thermal effects, and operational reliability
• Support optical alignment, integration, and lab validation
• Develop assembly and test procedures and iterate designs based on results
• Generate manufacturing drawings with GD&T
• Coordinate with vendors for fabrication and inspection
• Prepare technical documentation and participate in design reviews

• Strong fundamentals in mechanical design and structural mechanics
• Experience in opto-mechanical or precision mechanical systems
• Understanding of electro-mechanical integration
• Proficiency in GD&T and tolerance analysis
• Hands-on hardware development experience
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced startup environment

• SolidWorks, ANSYS / COMSOL or equivalent FEA tools, Zemax OpticStudio or similar optical tools
• MATLAB / Python

• B.Tech / M.Tech / MS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Optical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related fields
• 35 years of relevant experience in precision hardware or opto-mechanical systems
