Microlab Testing is hiring a Junior Metallurgist / Materials Testing Engineer for our Chennai lab. This is an entry-level role for candidates with 05 years of experience who are eager to build strong practical capability in metallurgical testing and analysis. You will execute testing as per ASTM / ISO / customer specifications , generate accurate test data, and support technical interpretation and reporting under guidance from senior team members.
Preference will be given to candidates based in Chennai (or willing to relocate immediately).
- Execute metallurgical and materials testing as per ASTM, ISO, and customer-specific test methods (routine and development trials under supervision).
- Prepare test plans/checklists, understand acceptance criteria, and ensure all steps are followed without deviation.
- Perform or support metallurgical examination and characterization , including sample preparation and microstructural evaluation (as applicable to the lab scope).
- Capture, validate, and organize raw data; perform basic calculations and trending; flag anomalies promptly.
- Assist in interpretation of results (mechanical test outcomes, micrographs, chemistry trends, etc.) and draft clear test reports.
- Support investigations such as failure analysis by documenting observations, evidence, and probable mechanisms with guidance.
- Maintain compliance with laboratory quality requirements: calibration checks, traceability, document control, and test record completeness.
- Demonstrate initiative to learn: read standards, understand methodology intent, and build familiarity with new alloys, microstructures, and testing best practices .
- Dipl./B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
- 05 years experience in a testing lab, manufacturing QA/QC, metallurgy, or materials characterization environment.
- Working knowledge (or strong willingness to learn) of ASTM/ISO standards and method-based execution.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written procedures; strong documentation discipline.
- Good analytical thinking with attention to detail and a structured approach to problem-solving.
- Clear communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional technical teams.
- Exposure to any of the following: microstructural analysis, metallography, heat treatment awareness, failure analysis workflow, or corrosion-related tests.
- Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 environment, basic uncertainty/traceability concepts, or laboratory QA practices.
- Familiar with Non-Ferrous alloy microstructures.
- Comfort with spreadsheets and basic data interpretation (graphs, trends, comparisons, outlier identification).
- Work with high-end testing equipment and a technically strong team.
- Broad exposure to multiple industries (automotive, aerospace, heavy engineering) and a wide range of materials.
- Structured learning curve: standards-based testing, documentation discipline, and real-world interpretation skills.
- Growth path into specialist roles (metallography, failure analysis, corrosion, mechanical testing, etc.).
