Job Description
A. About the Role:
Environmental and Social Expert with experience in working with international environmental and social standards (e.g., World Bank-ESS, IFC Performance Standards, IFC EHS Guidelines), will be a key member of our project team. Should manage Environmental, Social, Health, and Safety (ESHS) aspects across all stages of the project cycle from planning, design to construction supervision and post-implementation monitoring with a strong focus on the water and pumped hydro power sectors. Should ESHS management for water supply, river basin improvement and water management, irrigation modernization, Pumped Hydro and power evacuation projects financed by World Bank, ADB, and IFC, ensuring full compliance with international safeguard policies. Should have expertise for ESIA and ESMP preparation, stakeholder engagement, occupational health and safety management, and climate and biodiversity risk mitigation. Should consistently ensure sustainable project outcomes by embedding robust ESHS frameworks, monitoring mechanisms, and institutional capacity-building measures throughout the project lifecycle.
B. Detailed expectations from the role:
The Environmental and Social (E&S) Expert will be responsible for managing Environmental, Social, Health, and Safety (ESHS) impacts and risks throughout the project lifecycle. Key expectations include:
- Assessment & Planning: Carry out an Environmental and Social Assessment proportionate to project risks according to Kiwi Sustainability Guidelines and international standards.
- Document Preparation: Prepare and implement the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) and Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP).
- Contractor Supervision: Rigorously supervise the Contractors ESHS implementation, ensuring compliance with the agreed Code of Conduct and ESHS measures.
- Compliance Monitoring: Ensure the project adheres to all national regulations and international standards, including World Bank and KfW requirements.
- Risk Mitigation: Ensure Contactor implement measures to prevent sexual exploitation, abuse, and gender-based violence (GBV) as per international protocols.
- Reporting: Assistance in fulfilling E&S reporting requirements toward Client, Funding Agency and other stakeholders.
- Data and Document Management: Maintain and manage all technical documents, presentations, reports, and data related to the ESHS/ ESMP aspects of the projects.
- Coordination and Communication: Liaise with clients, government agencies, and other stakeholders to present findings, discuss technical issues, and ensure project alignment with client expectations.
C. Required skill set
- Should be able to do multi-tasking on assignments and be able to deliver in typical consulting environment.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills are essential for interacting with stakeholders.
- Thorough Technical Knowledge and Understanding:
- Standards Expertise: Deep knowledge of international environmental and social standards (e.g., World Bank ESS, IFC Performance Standards, IFC EHS Guidelines, and KfW Sustainability Guidelines).
- Regulatory Knowledge: Proficiency in national labor laws, International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards, and international environmental treaties.
- Project Management: Ability to act as part of a Project Implementation Consultant (PIC) team for E&S Aspects under FIDIC contract conditions.
- Technical Writing: Expertise in preparing ESMPs, SEPs, ESIA, and technical ESHS audit reports.
- Soft Skills: Strong coordination skills for managing stakeholder engagement and supervising contractor compliance on-site.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Should be proficient in data analysis and adept at using presentation tools. Must have expertise in conducting in-depth research.
- Must have a proven ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team.
D. Education and Experience
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related field (consistent with specialist requirements for international consulting roles).
- Minimum of 6 years for Sr. Analyst/ 10 years for Manager with proven experience in carrying out E&S assessments for utility-scale infrastructure projects (pumping systems, irrigation, hydro power or water supply).
- Experience working with International Financial Institutions (IFIs) like KfW or the World Bank is highly desirable.
- Specific experience in implementing and monitoring E&S sustainability in complex hydro power / energy and Other infrastructure projects.
E. Location
- Base location shall be Pune. However, the role would require the applicant to undertake travel or relocation for pursuing various opportunities.
