Job Description: Librarian & Storyteller (Nursery Grade V)

1. Job Purpose

The Librarian & Storyteller will be responsible for managing the junior school library and fostering a love for reading, imagination, and language among students from Nursery to Grade V. The role aims to develop early literacy habits through engaging storytelling sessions, structured reading programs, and effective library management.

2. Key Roles & Responsibilities

A. Library Management & Operations

• Organize, catalogue, and maintain age-appropriate books and learning resources.
• Manage issue, return, and record-keeping of library materials.
• Maintain a child-friendly, safe, and welcoming library environment.
• Coordinate with vendors and management for procurement of books and resources.

B. Reading Promotion & Storytelling

• Conduct regular storytelling sessions using voice modulation, expressions, and props.
• Encourage reading habits through book talks, reading challenges, and library activities.
• Introduce students to different genres, authors, and cultures.
• Support phonics, vocabulary, and language development through stories.

C. Curriculum Support & Integration

• Align library programs with the schools academic curriculum.
• Support classroom teachers with reference materials and reading resources.
• Collaborate in planning literacy-based projects and events.

D. Student Engagement & Development

• Guide students in book selection based on reading level and interest.
• Track reading progress and participation in library programs.
• Encourage responsible handling of books and library discipline.

E. Professional Collaboration & Events

• Work closely with teachers, coordinators, and management.
• Organize book fairs, reading weeks, author interactions, and literacy events.
• Participate in trainings, workshops, and school activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelors Degree in Library Science (B.Lib / B.Lib.I.Sc) or equivalent.
• Degree/Diploma in Education / Early Childhood Education (preferred).
• Certification in storytelling / child literature (desirable).

Experience

• Minimum 24 years of experience in a school library (primary/pre-primary preferred).
• Proven experience in conducting storytelling and reading sessions for young learners.
• Experience in managing digital and physical library resources.

Skills

• Excellent storytelling and expressive communication skills.
• Strong organizational and record-keeping abilities.
• Knowledge of childrens literature and reading-level frameworks.
• Classroom and group management skills for young children.
• Basic ICT skills for library software and digital resources.
