Brief Description about the role:
The Lead Software Test Engineer is responsible for coordinating, guiding, and technically leading the software model test team to ensure highquality validation of MATLAB/Simulink models and associated embedded software. The role oversees work allocation, prioritisation, adherence to process, and alignment with Product Owners and wider engineering leadership.
This position requires deep expertise in developing unit, integration, and qualification tests using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, dSPACE, XRay, and relevant experience on test rigs or physical test properties. The Lead Software Model Tester will define test strategies, build robust test plans, execute and evaluate test outputs, and ensure all testing activities meet JLRs Quality Management System (QMS), aSPICE expectations, and ISO 26262 safety principles.
Working closely with development teams, Functional Safety (FuSa) specialists, and aSPICE experts, the lead will support continuous process improvement, provide expert consultancy on testing and compliance, and ensure that all safety related work products are complete, traceable, and fully compliant.
Beyond technical delivery, the Lead Software Test Engineer provides daily direction for the test team, ensuring consistent standards, strong engineering discipline, and alignment with broader departmental workstreams and priorities.
Preferred candidate profile
Skills, experience and qualifications:
Essential:
- Graduates / Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
- Expert in developing unit tests, integration tests, and software qualification tests using toolsets such as MATLAB/Simulink, dSPACE, XRay, along with other physical test assets.
- Comprehensive knowledge of MATLAB/Simulinkbased testing for modelbased software across MiL, SiL, and PiL environments
- Strong experience defining test strategy, detailed test plans, and structured evaluation of test outputs
- Experience analysing detailed design specifications, functional requirements, and verification needs to derive robust test cases
- Deep understanding of test coverage techniques, including Decision, Condition, and MC/DC coverage
- Proficiency in evaluating requirements coverage, model coverage, and code coverage
- Accountability and ownership in generating safety related test work products
- Strong familiarity of ASPICE concepts and ISO 26262 highlevel functional safety principles
- Expert user of Automotive Quality Management System frameworks
- Skilled in supporting ASPICE and FuSa assessments, providing feedback and driving process improvements
- Effective communication and proven ability to lead and coordinate a software test team, including task allocation, prioritisation, technical support, and process adherence
Desirable:
- Prior experience in a technical leadership role
- Strong familiarity with electrified automotive control concepts (eg. torque path, energy management etc)
- Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, and other enterprise lifecycle tools
- Previously trained or certified in aSPICE or ISO 26262.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities,
- Leads & coordinates the testing team, PO and Lead Model Developer with regards to work allocation, technical topics, prioritisation, process adherence, etc
- Consults with leadership team and wider dept. for alignment with other core activities / workstreams
- Consults with FuSa and aSPICE experts for process feedback and improvement suggestions
- Work within an Agile development framework to deliver high quality tests to rigorously test frequent software releases for prototype and production programs
- Define test strategies, build robust test plans, execute and evaluate test outputs, and ensure all testing activities meet JLRs Quality Management System (QMS), aSPICE expectations, and ISO 26262 safety principles
- Accountable for the generation of all Model Based Design safety work products
- Perform reviews for the test developed by SW Model Testers according to testing strategy and aSPICE process
- Maintains strong alignment on project goals with Product Owners and cross functional engineering groups
- Provides guidance for the test team, ensuring consistent standards, strong engineering discipline
