Position Summary...
We are seeking a Staff Engineer to lead the design and evolution of backend and data systems that power our ad measurement, attribution, and reporting platform. This role focuses on building highly reliable, scalable, and privacy-aware systems that process massive volumes of advertising events and turn them into accurate, actionable insights.As a Staff Engineer, you will operate at the system and organizational level—driving architecture, setting technical standards, and mentoring engineers across teams—while remaining hands-on with complex backend and data challenges..

About the team
The Advertisers Insights team is responsible for the measurement, reporting, and analytics backbone of Walmart International’s advertising platform. The team builds systems that transform raw ad interaction data into trusted, privacy-safe insights for advertisers, merchants, and internal stakeholders across Walmart’s international markets.
Build Insights owns the end-to-end ad measurement lifecycle, including:
- Event ingestion: Collecting high-volume ad events (impressions, clicks, conversions) across multiple international markets
- Measurement & attribution: Powering attribution models, conversion tracking, and performance metrics
- Reporting & analytics: Enabling near real-time and offline reporting dashboards for advertisers and internal teams
- Data correctness & trust: Ensuring metrics are accurate, consistent, and explainable across systems
Privacy-first measurement: Designing systems that comply with global privacy regulations ( consent, data residency)
What You’ll Do
Technical Leadership
Own and evolve core backend and data architectures supporting ad serving, bidding, measurement, and reporting
Lead design reviews for complex distributed systems and data pipelines
Set best practices for system reliability, performance, data correctness, and privacy
Act as a technical multiplier across multiple teams (mentorship, reviews, RFCs)
Backend Systems
Design and build high-throughput, low-latency services for ad serving and real-time decisioning
Work on systems handling millions/billions of events per day
Optimize APIs, storage, and compute for scale, cost, and reliability
Improve observability, fault tolerance, and operational excellence
Data & Analytics
Architect and maintain streaming and batch data pipelines for logs, metrics, and user/event data
Ensure data quality, lineage, and correctness across real-time and offline systems
Partner with data science and analytics teams on experimentation, attribution, and measurement
Design data models that support both real-time insights and long-term analytics
Cross-Functional Impact
Collaborate with Product, DS, Privacy, and Infra on roadmap and trade-offs
Influence technical direction without formal authority
Balance speed, correctness, privacy, and cost in Ad Tech environments
What You’ll bring
5+ years of backend and/or data engineering experience, with Staff-level scope
Strong experience building distributed systems at scale
Deep knowledge of backend fundamentals: concurrency, networking, APIs, storage, caching
Solid experience with data systems, such as:
Streaming (Kafka, Pulsar, Kinesis, Flink, Spark Streaming)
Batch processing (Spark, Beam, Hive)
OLAP/analytics stores (BigQuery, Snowflake, Druid)
Proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g., Java, Scala, Go, Python)
Experience designing systems with high data volume, low latency, and strict SLAs
Strong system design, debugging, and performance optimization skills
