Job Description
A histotechnician's job is to prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Their responsibilities include:
- Preparing tissue samples: Examining, fixing, and processing tissue samples to preserve them. This includes embedding the tissue in paraffin wax, cutting it with a microtome or cryostat, mounting it on a slide, and staining it to highlight abnormalities.
- Managing specimens: Receiving, sorting, and logging specimens from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases. This includes ensuring proper patient identification and specimen integrity.
- Maintaining equipment: Performing preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment and instruments.
- Quality control: Managing laboratory quality-control procedures.
- Interacting with others: Interacting with healthcare professionals and other staff.
- Assisting pathologists: Assisting pathologists with tissue grossing procedures.
