Role Overview

PIF is seeking a Gen AI Engineer / AI Engineer to design, develop, and deploy AI-powered systems that enhance organisational research, knowledge management, and operational efficiency. The role will focus on building AI applications using large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and intelligent automation tools.

The candidate will work closely with research, data, and programme teams to develop scalable AI solutions that support data-driven decision-making and organisational productivity.

Key Responsibilities

a) AI System Development

• Design, build, and deploy AI-powered applications using Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures.
• Develop enterprise-grade AI assistants and chatbots to support organisational research, knowledge management, and internal workflows.
• Build backend services and APIs to support AI-driven tools and applications.

b) Data & Knowledge Systems

• Develop document ingestion pipelines including data extraction, chunking, metadata tagging, and embedding generation.
• Integrate vector databases and semantic search tools to enable efficient retrieval of organisational knowledge.
• Implement hybrid retrieval strategies and optimise information discovery across datasets and documents.

c) Automation & Intelligent Workflows

• Develop agent-based workflows and automation tools that support task execution, reasoning, and system integration.
• Integrate AI solutions with internal systems, databases, and collaboration tools.
• Support development of AI-driven tools that enhance research productivity and organisational processes.

d) Deployment, Monitoring & Governance

• Deploy scalable AI systems and ensure reliability, performance, and security.
• Implement evaluation frameworks, monitoring systems, and feedback loops for continuous improvement of AI models.
• Ensure compliance with organisational data governance and security standards.

e) Collaboration & Innovation

• Work closely with research, programme, and data teams to identify opportunities for AI integration.
• Contribute to experimentation with emerging AI technologies and innovative applications within the organisation.
• Support capacity building by assisting teams in understanding and adopting AI-powered tools.

Qualifications & Experience

• Masters degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field.
• 36 years of experience in AI engineering, machine learning, or advanced data systems development.
• Hands-on experience building applications using large language models or generative AI technologies.
• Experience working with backend development frameworks and scalable AI systems

Skills & Competencies

• Strong programming skills in Python and backend development.
• Experience working with LLM APIs such as OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, or similar models.
• Familiarity with RAG pipelines and vector databases such as Pinecone, Chroma, Weaviate, or FAISS.
• Experience with frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, or similar AI orchestration tools.
• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
