The Financial Counsellor assists patients and their families in understanding the financial aspects of medical care. This role involves explaining hospital charges, insurance coverage, payment options, financial assistance programs, and helping patients plan for medical expenses while ensuring compliance with hospital billing policies.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Financial Guidance

• Counsel patients and families regarding hospital charges, estimated treatment costs, and payment policies.
• Explain insurance benefits, coverage limitations, deductibles, and co-payments.
• Provide cost estimates for procedures, treatments, and hospital stays.

Insurance Coordination

• Verify insurance eligibility and coverage details.
• Coordinate with insurance companies for approvals and pre-authorizations.
• Assist patients in completing insurance documentation.

Financial Assistance Programs

• Educate patients about financial assistance, government schemes, and charity care programs.
• Help patients apply for applicable financial support programs.
• Evaluate eligibility for hospital financial aid policies.

Payment Arrangements

• Discuss payment plans with patients who cannot pay the full amount upfront.
• Collect deposits and coordinate payment options.
• Maintain records of financial agreements with patients.

Documentation & Compliance

• Maintain accurate documentation of patient financial counselling sessions.
• Ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory guidelines.
• Update patient financial records in the hospital information system.

Interdepartmental Coordination

• Work closely with billing, admissions, insurance, and clinical departments.
• Support the revenue cycle process by ensuring financial clearance before treatment when applicable.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelors degree in Finance, Commerce, Healthcare Administration, or related field.

Experience

• 25 years of experience in hospital billing, medical insurance, or financial counselling preferred.
