Metal Fabrication Engineer / Sheet Metal Design Engineer

Position Overview

The Metal Fabrication/Sheet Metal Design Engineer will be responsible for leading end-to-end design, development, and fabrication of sheet metal components, assemblies, and structures. The role demands strong technical expertise in sheet metal engineering, advanced CAD proficiency, fabrication processes, and cross-functional collaboration with production, quality, vendors, and R&D teams.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering

- Lead design of sheet metal components, enclosures, frames, brackets, and assemblies.

- Develop 3D models, 2D drawings, GD&T, BOMs, and specifications.

- Perform sheet metal design calculations.

- Drive DFM, DFA, DFS for manufacturability and cost optimization.

Fabrication & Manufacturing

- Oversee fabrication processes including cutting, bending, stamping, welding, finishing.

- Collaborate with shop floor teams to resolve issues.

- Define tooling, jigs, fixtures, and process parameters.

Quality & Standards

- Ensure compliance with IS/ASTM/ISO standards.

- Develop inspection plans and quality criteria.

- Conduct tolerance stack-up, FMEA, RCA.

Vendor Development

- Evaluate and qualify fabrication vendors.

- Review vendor capabilities, costing, and negotiate.

Project Leadership

- Lead NPD and engineering projects.

- Collaborate with R&D, supply chain, production, and quality teams.

Required Skills & Competencies

- Expertise in sheet metal design and fabrication.

- Strong CAD proficiency.

- Knowledge of GD&T, materials, tooling, and processes.

- Excellent communication and leadership.

Qualifications

- Bachelors or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

- Minimum 15 years experience in sheet metal design or metal fabrication.

Preferred

- Experience with ISO systems, PDM/PLM, FEA tools.

- Exposure to lean manufacturing or Six Sigma.
