Engineering Manager - New Initiatives

The Role

We're seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead and scale our New Initiatives engineering team to drive JoVEs growth initiatives in the ed-tech space. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll manage 8-12 engineers (backend, frontend, and technical SEO specialists) while remaining deeply involved in architecture, debugging, and critical technical decisions. You'll be instrumental in leveraging AI/ML capabilities to enhance our platform and deliver exceptional learning experiences.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of 8-12 individual contributor engineers, including contractors and third-party resources
• Ensure delivery excellence on-time, on-budget, and high-quality outputs across all projects
• Build strong engineering practices around code review, testing, and deployment
• Design and review scalable architecture for growth-oriented features and infrastructure
• Write code for critical features, infrastructure improvements, and complex technical challenges
• Lead technical decision-making on architecture, tooling, and best practices
• Ensure DevOps and site reliability best practices are implemented and maintained
• Guide AI/ML integration strategy and implementation across the platform
• Optimize platform performance, scalability, and reliability

Requirements:

• A Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field
• 7-10 years of engineering experience with progressive leadership responsibility
• Proven track record of managing engineering teams (5+ direct reports) and delivering complex projects
• Deep expertise in scalable architecture and distributed systems
• Strong full-stack development skills, particularly with modern web technologies
• Hands-on experience debugging production issues and implementing solutions
• Solid understanding of DevOps practices and site reliability engineering
• Proactive, results driven and thrives in a fast paced environment

Required Technical Skills:

• Backend : Python, FastAPI, RESTful APIs, microservices architecture
• Frontend : React, modern JavaScript/TypeScript, responsive web design
• Infrastructure : AWS (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, etc.), CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
• AI/ML : Experience integrating LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), understanding of AI/ML pipelines and workflows
• DevOps : Monitoring, logging, alerting, incident response, performance optimization
• Technical SEO : Understanding of technical SEO principles and their implementation (bonus)
