About EC&S:

Caterpillar’s Engine Components and Systems group, within LPSD, is focused on creating integrated engine systems to enable Caterpillar product to provide industry leading performance, value, and durability with a differentiated product that will make our customers successful. The EC&S team is responsible for design and development of engine air and exhaust systems, turbocharger systems, small fluid lines, cooling systems, lubrication systems, crankcase ventilation systems, covers and guards.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our team located at World Trade Center, Chennai. In this role, you will be responsible for the project leadership and delivery of the small lines design on the Medium Vee (C27, C32, 3400) and C7 to C18 Marine engine platforms. This will include selection, design, development and validation of the small lines including all tube & hose assemblies, couplings, clamping, castings and light fabrication parts. You will have the opportunity to work with and learn from a highly experienced team of engineers having significant experience across Caterpillar engine systems. 

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

• Work with the engine platform teams to establish system requirements. Develop and implement small line design to support NPI & NTI programs.

• Collaborate with other component engineering teams to provide a fully integrated lines group level design to meet program requirements.

• Resolve design and quality problems by applying sound engineering judgement, advanced analysis techniques, and testing.

• Develop capable suppliers that can meet stringent drawing and specification requirements, while providing a cost-effective product. Ensure a robust sourcing strategy to meet growing production demand.  Travel upto 10% may be required.  

• Work seamlessly with operations to ensure the product is produced as intended to meet customer expectations and the voice of the business.

• Lead other engineers within the Cat global EC&S team for design and the release of prints for production.

• Reduce product cost through design refinement, supplier collaboration, and sourcing strategy.

• Identify and work with other Caterpillar SMEs to ensure a comprehensive design which meets mechanical, thermal, life and performance requirements.

• Stay up to date with the latest advances in tubing, hoses, couplings, casting, metal fabrication and related engine systems.

• Prepare and support execution of test plans to verify designs with simulation and to validate system designs in the lab and on prime product.

Required Qualification:

• Degree Requirement: Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate Degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, Production Engineering, Automotive Engineering or equivalent with 6 to 12 years of experience in the field.

• Experience in design of engine components with special emphasis on hoses, tubes, castings, fluid systems, and structural integrity of mechanical systems.

• Validation testing definition experience using FMEA and DVP&R methods

• Ability to work or lead multiple projects simultaneously and to make sound priority decisions

• Have prior experience working with suppliers and procurement team along with project planning experience

• Strong analytical skills with excellent communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills

Desired Qualifications:

• Proficiency in CREO CAD Tool / Piping Design

• CAE & CFD Basic Knowledge

• Experience with quality tools including APQP & PPAP
