Job Description
A highly accomplished Electrical Design Manager with extensive experience in leading the design, engineering, and development of Extra High Voltage (EHV) power transformers up to 500 MVA, 400 kV class . Proven expertise in conceptual design, detailed engineering, insulation coordination, short-circuit analysis, thermal and mechanical design, and advanced software-based simulations.
Strong leadership capabilities in managing cross-functional engineering teams, coordinating with manufacturing, quality, testing, sourcing, and project management departments to deliver reliable, cost-optimized, and standards-compliant transformer solutions.
Core Competencies
- EHV Transformer Design: Expertise in electromagnetic design, insulation design (OIP/OF), thermal design, tank and mechanical structure, and auxiliary systems for transformers up to 500 MVA, 400 kV.
- International Standards: Strong command of IEC, IEEE/ANSI, IS, EN, and utility-specific specifications.
- Design Calculations & Tools:
- EM design software (e.g., Flux, MagNet, ANSYS, RTD tools)
- Short-circuit withstand analysis
- Lightning impulse, switching impulse, and insulation coordination
- Thermal modeling (ONAN/ONAF/ODAF/OFWF cooling)
- Testing & Validation: Expertise in FAT, type tests, special tests, dielectric tests, SC tests, and temperature rise tests.
- Failure Analysis: Skilled at root cause analysis, diagnostics, and design optimization for improved reliability.
- Project & Team Leadership: Proven ability to lead design teams, review drawing packages, GTPs, BoQs, test protocols, and interact with customers, consultants, and certification bodies.
- Cost Optimization: Experience in material selection, design optimization, and cost-effective engineering without compromising quality or reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the complete design cycle for EHV transformers up to 500 MVA, 400 kV.
- Review and approve electrical, mechanical, and control & protection designs.
- Conduct insulation coordination studies and ensure compliance with dielectric requirements.
- Mentor and guide junior designers and engineers.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to resolve production challenges.
- Support marketing/sales with tender designs, technical clarifications, and customer meetings.
- Ensure strict adherence to quality, safety, and regulatory standards.
- Manage design documentation, GAs, SLDs, schematics, and client approvals.
Professional Experience
- Minimum 1520 years in EHV transformer design with at least 5 years in a managerial or lead design role.
- Experience working with global utilities, EPCs, and certification agencies.
- Track record of successful execution of large power transformer projects (220/400 kV and above).
Education
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems or related specialisation preferred).
