Position Overview

As the Developer Tools RE Chapter Lead, you will serve as the strategic and operational leader for a cross-functional team dedicated to advancing reliability, automation, and developer productivity across The Hartfords technology platforms. This role is accountable for building, adopting, and maturing the RE tools, practices, and automation of DevSecOps, Quality, Release Engineering, and Observability. You will own the end-to-end delivery and optimization of cloud automation capabilities, enabling infrastructure provisioning, application availability, testing, deployment, resiliency, and recovery for IT applications. Your mandate includes driving the transformation of developer tools platformsspanning CI/CD, observability, and GenAIwhile embedding a culture of continuous improvement and innovation throughout the squad.

You will lead the design and execution of the reliability engineering strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives and resiliency goals. This includes championing the integration of AI-powered observability and automation into developer workflows, enabling intelligent alerting, automated incident response, and predictive analytics to reduce MTTR and improve reliability. As a people leader and strategic partner, you will develop and maintain a sustainable organization through hiring, coaching, and performance management, while fostering collaboration with stakeholders across Application Development, Cloud Engineering, Enterprise Architecture, and Security. You will be responsible for establishing and monitoring key performance indicators such as golden signals, error budgets, and developer efficiency metrics, driving optimal performance and productivity across engineering teams.

The leader of RE Squad is expected to bring deep expertise in cloud-native technologies, DevOps, observability platforms, and GenAI tools, with a proven track record of delivering results in Agile-based, cloud-centric operating models. You will be instrumental in shaping the future of reliability engineering at The Hartford, leading transformational change, and ensuring the highest standards of security, efficiency, and resiliency. Success in this role will be measured by the stability and quality of customer-facing services, reduction of technical debt, proactive risk mitigation, and the continuous evolution of developer tools and practices to support business growth and operational excellence.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic planning, design, and operational management of the Reliability Engineering (RE) Squad, with direct accountability for Developer Tools, DevOps, Observability, and GenAI platforms.
  • Build, adopt, and mature RE tools, practices, and automation for DevSecOps, CI/CD, quality engineering, and release management across the developer ecosystem.
  • Drive the integration and continuous evolution of observability platforms (e.g., Splunk, Dynatrace) and embed AI/GenAI capabilities for intelligent alerting, automated incident response, and predictive analytics.
  • Oversee the delivery and optimization of cloud automation capabilities, enabling infrastructure provisioning, application availability, testing, deployment, resiliency, and recovery.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as golden signals, error budgets, developer efficiency metrics, and SLOs to ensure top-quartile reliability and productivity.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and automation, championing the adoption of software-driven solutions and best practices across the squad.
  • Develop and maintain a sustainable, high-performing organization through hiring, coaching, performance management, and talent development.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Application Development, Cloud Engineering, Enterprise Architecture, Security, and Product teams to deliver secure, scalable, and resilient solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with enterprise logging, monitoring, and security standards, and drive proactive risk mitigation and technical debt reduction.
  • Lead market research and adoption of emerging technologies, continuously modernizing developer tools, automation patterns, and operational practices to support business growth and operational excellence.


Required Skills & Experience:

  • 12-15 years of experience with enterprise DevOps toolchains (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines) and cloud-native automation platforms.
  • Experience working in large technology firms, highly regulated industries in FS&I, or tenure in large corporate enterprises.
  • Proficiency in observability tools and practices, including Splunk, Dynatrace, and AI-driven monitoring/alerting solutions.
  • Solid understanding of GenAI technologies and their application in IT operations (e.g., anomaly detection, automated RCA, AI-powered dashboards).
  • Demonstrated leadership in reliability engineering, including cloud transformation, automation, and incident management in large-scale environments.
  • Bachelors or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; relevant certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), or equivalent.


Nice to Have

  • Experience implementing or managing GenAI/LLM-powered developer tools or observability solutions.
  • Familiarity with cloud FinOps, cost optimization, and cloud security best practices.
  • Exposure to large-scale Agile transformation or operating in a matrixed, global technology organization.
  • Advanced certifications such as AWS Certified Solution Architect, Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD), or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) and modern container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes, ECS).
