Position Title: Design Engineer HVAC (Data Center)

Position Overview

The HVAC Design Engineer Data Center will be responsible for the design, analysis, and coordination of cooling systems for mission-critical Data Center facilities. The role involves developing high-reliability HVAC solutions including air-cooled systems, Direct Liquid Cooling (DCLC), Liquid Immersion Cooling (LIC), and Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) systems.

The candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver efficient, scalable, and redundant cooling infrastructure that meets Data Center operational standards and international design guidelines.


Key Responsibilities

HVAC System Design

  • Develop conceptual, schematic, and detailed HVAC designs for Data Center facilities.
  • Perform cooling load calculations and equipment sizing for mission-critical environments.
  • Design and prepare layouts for:
  • Chilled water systems
  • SFN systems
  • Precision cooling systems (CRAH / CRAC/FWU/PAHU)
  • Air-cooled chiller plants
  • Cooling distribution systems
  • Develop HVAC equipment schedules, technical specifications, and design documentation.
  • Plumbing System Design
  • Develop conceptual, schematic, and detailed designs for plumbing systems.
  • Design systems including:
  • Domestic water supply systems
  • Cold and hot water distribution
  • Drainage and wastewater systems
  • Storm water drainage systems
  • Sewage systems
  • Prepare plumbing layouts, riser diagrams, and system schematics.


Data Center Cooling Systems

Design and support implementation of advanced cooling technologies including:

Air-Cooled Systems

  • Design air-cooled chiller systems and condenser systems.
  • Develop redundancy configurations (N, N+1, 2N) for critical infrastructure.
  • Implement airflow management strategies such as:
  • Hot aisle / Cold aisle containment
  • Raised floor cooling distribution
  • Overhead cooling solutions.

Direct Liquid Cooling (DCLC)

  • Design Direct-to-Chip liquid cooling infrastructure.
  • Develop Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU) systems and piping networks.
  • Coordinate integration between IT equipment and cooling systems.

Liquid Immersion Cooling (LIC)

  • Design solutions for single-phase and two-phase immersion cooling systems.
  • Support integration of immersion tanks with heat rejection systems.
  • Coordinate with IT vendors and equipment manufacturers.


Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) Systems

  • Design and integrate Plate Heat Exchangers within cooling loops.
  • Support primary-secondary chilled water separation.
  • Evaluate free cooling and heat recovery strategies using PHE systems.
  • Perform thermal calculations and PHE selection.


Engineering Analysis

  • Perform:
  • Cooling load calculations
  • Hydraulic calculations for chilled water systems
  • Energy efficiency analysis
  • Support development of energy-efficient cooling strategies.


Design Documentation

Prepare engineering documentation including:

  • HVAC design reports
  • Equipment sizing calculations
  • Technical specifications
  • Bill of Quantities (BOQ)
  • Design drawings and layouts
  • Tender documentation


Multidisciplinary Coordination

  • Coordinate HVAC designs with:
  • Electrical systems
  • Structural engineering
  • Architectural layouts
  • IT infrastructure teams
  • Participate in design coordination meetings and technical reviews.
  • Support BIM coordination and clash detection activities.


Standards & Compliance

Ensure all designs comply with applicable standards including:

  • ASHRAE Thermal Guidelines for Data Centers
  • TIA-942/Uptime Data Center Standards
  • Uptime Institute Tier Guidelines
  • ASHRAE 90.1 Energy Standards
  • Local authority and building codes.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.


Experience

  • 78 years of HVAC design experience in MEP / Data Center / mission-critical facilities.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Data Center HVAC design.


Technical Skills

  • Data Center cooling design
  • Air-cooled chiller systems
  • Direct Liquid Cooling (DCLC)
  • Liquid Immersion Cooling (LIC)
  • Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) systems
  • HVAC load calculations
  • Chilled water systems
  • Adiabatic cooling, Dry cooling.
  • Free cooling.
  • Economizer.


Software Proficiency

  • AutoCAD
  • Revit MEP / BIM
  • HVAC load calculation software (HAP / IES / similar tools)
  • Microsoft Office Suite


Key Competencies

  • Strong analytical and engineering problem-solving skills
  • Coordinate with consultants, PMC, site execution.
  • Understanding of mission-critical cooling infrastructure
  • Ability to design high availability HVAC systems
  • Strong coordination and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality
  • Added knowledge of basic Plumbing services shall be an advantage.


Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Hyperscale or Colocation Data Centers
  • Exposure to BIM-based project environments
  • Experience in energy-efficient cooling strategies and sustainability initiatives
