Job Description: Dean (Academics)

Position Overview

The Dean Academics serves as the chief academic authority of the institution and is responsible for providing strategic leadership, operational oversight, and regulatory compliance across all academic functions. The role ensures that teaching, learning, curriculum development, evaluation systems, and academic governance meet the highest standards of quality, integrity, and statutory compliance.

The Dean is expected to foster academic excellence, promote innovation in pedagogy, ensure student success, and uphold institutional values while aligning academic initiatives with long-term strategic goals.

Roles and Responsibilities

A. Academic Leadership & Strategic Planning

  • Provide visionary leadership in the development and implementation of academic strategies aligned with institutional mission and regulatory frameworks.
  • Formulate, review, and update academic policies to ensure relevance, quality, and compliance.
  • Lead long-term academic planning including program expansion, interdisciplinary initiatives, and credit framework alignment.
  • Chair academic committees and contribute actively to Governing Council and Academic Council deliberations.

B. Curriculum Development & Academic Design

  • Oversee the design, revision, and continuous improvement of curricula in line with Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles.
  • Ensure alignment of curriculum with national education policies, UGC guidelines, and industry requirements.
  • Monitor course file preparation, lesson plans, and academic documentation standards.
  • Facilitate Board of Studies meetings and ensure systematic curriculum review cycles.

C. Academic Quality Assurance & Accreditation

  • Supervise Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) academic processes and ensure continuous quality enhancement initiatives.
  • Ensure systematic documentation for NAAC, NBA, UGC, AICTE, and other statutory bodies.
  • Lead academic audits, peer reviews, and compliance inspections.
  • Monitor implementation of corrective actions arising from accreditation recommendations.

D. Faculty Leadership & Development

  • Guide recruitment planning and provide academic input in faculty selection processes.
  • Oversee equitable workload distribution and teaching assignments.
  • Facilitate Faculty Development Programs (FDPs), workshops, and academic capacity-building initiatives.
  • Conduct periodic academic performance reviews in coordination with HR and Heads of Departments.
  • Mentor department heads in academic governance and quality enhancement practices.

E. Examination & Evaluation Governance

  • Ensure integrity, transparency, and confidentiality in examination and evaluation processes.
  • Approve examination schedules, moderation policies, and result declarations.
  • Monitor internal assessment systems, grading standards, and academic fairness.
  • Conduct analysis of academic results and recommend academic interventions where required.

F. Student Academic Affairs

  • Supervise student mentoring systems and ensure structured academic counselling mechanisms.
  • Address academic grievances and ensure fair resolution processes.
  • Monitor student progression, retention rates, and academic performance trends.
  • Encourage student academic engagement through seminars, research initiatives, and interdisciplinary learning.

G. Regulatory Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure strict adherence to UGC regulations, AICTE norms, and other statutory requirements.
  • Oversee submission of institutional data to AISHE, NIRF, and other regulatory platforms.
  • Maintain updated academic records and compliance documentation.
  • Ensure timely submission of reports to regulatory and governing authorities.

H. Innovation & Digital Transformation

  • Promote integration of technology in teaching and learning practices.
  • Encourage blended learning, digital content development, and online academic systems.
  • Support adoption of learning management systems (LMS) and academic ERP tools.
  • Drive initiatives for academic innovation, interdisciplinary programs, and industry-academia collaboration.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ph.D. in a relevant discipline from a recognized university.
  • Minimum 15 years of teaching experience in higher education.
  • Experience as Professor / Senior Academic Leader as per UGC norms.
  • Proven administrative experience in academic governance roles.
  • Experience in accreditation and regulatory compliance processes is desirable.
