R&D Engineer Advanced Vision & Positioning Systems


Location: Pune

Employment Type: Full-time

About the Role

Altair is advancing an innovative vision-based positioning system that integrates a custom optical stack with a scientific algorithm pipeline capable of delivering accurate location estimates under challenging conditions.

We are expanding our team to further enhance system performance, improve accuracy, and transition the technology toward real-world deployment. This role is ideal for candidates with strong foundations in computer vision, astrophysics, mathematics, or scientific computing , who enjoy working in multidisciplinary R&D environments.


Key Responsibilities
  • Research, design, and optimize algorithms for image analysis, pattern recognition, and positioning estimation .
  • Collaborate closely with teams across optics, hardware, embedded systems, and software.
  • Improve the scientific codebase for robustness, computational efficiency, and real-time operation.
  • Perform modeling, simulation, and error analysis to drive accuracy improvements.
  • Conduct experiments, field tests, and data validation across varied operating conditions.
  • Participate in system integration, testing, and refinement as the technology matures.
  • Contribute to engineering documentation, test reports, and system reliability improvements.


Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Masters degree or PhD in Computer Vision, Astrophysics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields .
  • Strong proficiency in scientific programming (Python, C, C++, MATLAB, NumPy/SciPy, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of image processing, computer vision , and feature-extraction algorithms.
  • Strong mathematical background in modeling, estimation, optimization, and data analysis.
  • Experience with algorithm development in an R&D or prototyping environment .
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with navigation algorithms , estimation filters, or related positioning methods.
  • Familiarity with optical systems , sensor modeling, or low-light imaging.
  • Experience transitioning research algorithms into production-quality software.
  • Exposure to system-level engineering practices for complex sensor-driven technologies.
