The Opportunity
As a Platform Engineer III API Management, you will play a key role in designing, operating, and evolving McDonalds enterprise API management platforms. You will work hands-on with Gravitee and AWS API Gateway to ensure APIs are secure, scalable, observable, and reliable across U.S. and global operations.
This role is ideal for experienced platform engineers who enjoy owning production platforms, defining standards, mentoring others, and partnering across engineering, security, and governance teams to deliver business-critical API capabilities at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Qualifications
- Design, implement, and operate enterprise API management platforms using Gravitee and AWS API Gateway.
- Own API platform reliability and scalability, including traffic management, capacity planning, and performance tuning.
- Define and enforce API standards for lifecycle management, versioning, documentation, and deprecation.
- Implement and govern API security controls, including authentication, authorization, rate limiting, and policy enforcement, in partnership with InfoSec and governance teams.
- Lead and contribute to observability strategy for APIs, defining SLIs/SLOs, dashboards, alerts, and proactive monitoring using tools such as New Relic, Datadog, CloudWatch, and Grafana.
- Drive automation and CI/CD enablement for API onboarding, configuration management, and policy enforcement.
- Partner with application and product teams to onboard complex API use cases, ensuring consistent patterns and best practices.
- Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and post-incident improvements for API platform issues.
- Mentor Platform Engineer IIs and contribute to internal standards, documentation, and communities of practice for API excellence.
- Provide input into platform roadmap planning and architectural design discussions.

- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 68+ years of experience in platform engineering, API engineering, backend systems, or DevOps roles.
- Strong expertise in RESTful APIs, HTTP fundamentals, and API lifecycle management.
- Hands-on experience with API management platforms, including Gravitee and/or AWS API Gateway.
- Proven experience operating production-scale API platforms in cloud environments (AWS preferred; GCP exposure a plus).
- Strong understanding of API security frameworks, including OAuth2, OIDC, JWT, and API keybased authentication.
- Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code and automation (Terraform, CloudFormation, CI/CD pipelines).
- Demonstrated experience with API observability and monitoring, using tools such as New Relic, Datadog, CloudWatch, Grafana, or similar.
- Hands-on experience with enterprise API management platforms, such as Apigee, MuleSoft, Kong, Azure API Management, or similar.
- Experience configuring advanced API gateway policies, including transformations, traffic shaping, quotas, and security policies.
- Familiarity with platform governance, auditing, access controls, and compliance requirements.
- Experience supporting multi-region or global API platforms.
- Cloud or DevOps certifications (AWS, GCP, Terraform, or similar)
