We are looking to hire a Backend/Data Engineer to join our team at Ethical Den India in Kolkata. This is a fully onsite role and is suited to someone who enjoys building stable backend systems and working with real-world data.

Role overview:

You will be responsible for designing and maintaining backend services and data pipelines that support internal products and tools. The work involves handling structured and unstructured data, building APIs, and ensuring the reliability of the systems you develop.

Responsibilities:

• Build and maintain data ingestion, cleaning and transformation pipelines
• Develop REST APIs using Python frameworks such as FastAPI or Flask
• Work with JSON, CSV, Excel and other common data formats
• Structure messy or inconsistent datasets into usable forms
• Implement matching logic, rule-based workflows and deduplication routines where required
• Collaborate with other engineers to integrate backend components with applications
• Write clear technical documentation for services and data flows

Required skills:

• Strong Python development experience
• Hands-on experience with FastAPI, Flask or a similar backend framework
• Good understanding of SQL, data modelling and Pandas
• Ability to work with large or noisy datasets
• Comfort with debugging and improving backend performance

Good to have:

• Experience with GeoPandas, shapely or other GIS tools
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure)
• Basic exposure to front-end or simple internal dashboards (e.g. Streamlit)
