Job Description
Job Overview:
The Senior Manager Industrial Automation will lead the design, evaluation, and execution of industrial automation systems with a strong focus on hardware architecture, DCS platforms, and PLC-based control systems for pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
The role requires complete end-to-end knowledge of Rockwell and Siemens automation systems, including:
Full-scale DCS architectures
ClientServer based control systems
Standalone / single-system PLC solutions
The candidate must be capable of making technology and hardware decisions related to controllers, remote I/O, networking, field devices, power systems, control panels, and site execution in compliance with pharmaceutical regulatory standards.
Programming knowledge is advantageous but not mandatory. The primary responsibility is hardware system design, proposal evaluation, regulatory-compliant execution, and lifecycle support.
Education Qualification:
Education:
Bachelors degree in Electrical / Instrumentation / Electronics Engineering
Experience:
10 - 14 years of experience in industrial automation hardware and system design
Strong expertise in Rockwell and Siemens platforms
Proven experience in pharma projects (API, Formulation, Packaging, Utilities)
Experience in validation, audits, and regulatory compliance
Programming knowledge is an added advantage
Key Responsibilities:
1.Proposal Review & Technical Evaluation
- Review and approve automation proposals from a hardware and system architecture perspective.
- Evaluate technical specifications, BOQs, and vendor offers for compliance, reliability, and cost optimization.
- Ensure correct selection of DCS / PLC platforms, Remote I/O systems, valves, actuators, hygienic field instruments, UPS and power systems.
- Provide technical support to sales and commercial teams with pharma compliance considerations.
2.Automation System Architecture Design
- Design and approve DCS, ClientServer PLC, and Standalone PLC architectures for pharmaceutical plants.
- Define controller redundancy, network segmentation, RIO architecture, and power systems.
- Ensure compliance with OEM standards, cybersecurity, data integrity, and project specifications.
3.DCS & PLC Platform Expertise
- Lead system design using Siemens S7-1500 / PCS 7 / S7-400 and Rockwell ControlLogix / CompactLogix / PlantPAx.
- Select appropriate architecture based on batch processes, criticality, and validation requirements.
4.Hardware Selection & Engineering
- Decide and approve controllers, RIO, valves, actuators, instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level), and VFDs.
- Ensure hygienic design, material compatibility (SS316), and cleanroom suitability.
- Should have knowledge of Zone areas
5.Electrical & Network Interconnections
- Define electrical interconnections and industrial network layouts.
- Ensure proper grounding, shielding, EMC compliance, and cybersecurity.
- Ensure segregation of GMP and non-GMP networks where required.
6.Panel Engineering & Wiring Standards
- Lead the design of PLC / DCS control panels, marshalling panels, and MCC panels.
- Ensure compliance with pharma standards for:
- Panel cleanliness and IP ratings
- Cable segregation
- Labeling and traceability
- Documentation control
3.Following will be added advantage
- HV & LV panels
- Switchgear
- MCCs
- Transformers
- Power distribution systems
7. Site Execution & Commissioning Support
- Provide leadership during panel installation, field cabling, and commissioning in GMP areas.
- Support FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ, and PQ activities.
- Ensure compliance with cleanroom protocols and safety standards.
8.Vendor & Technology Management
- Coordinate with OEMs and vendors for technical clarifications, FATs, and inspections.
- Evaluate pharma-approved components and technologies.
9.Team Leadership & Technical Governance
- Mentor engineers.
- Standardize pharma engineering templates, validation checklists, and documentation procedures.
MANDATORY TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Complete knowledge of Rockwell PlantPAx / ControlLogix/ CompactLogix/ DCS
Complete knowledge of Siemens PCS 7 / S7-400 / S7-1500 DCS
ClientServer PLC architectures
Standalone PLC systems
Remote I/O systems
Network design and redundancy
UPS and power systems
Control panel design and wiring standards
Pharma validation and compliance (GAMP5, 21 CFR Part 11)
