Job Description
Job Title: Technical Designer (Furniture)
Role Overview
As a Technical Designer at Stax, you will act as the crucial link between our design team and manufacturing partners. You are responsible for transforming creative concepts into detailed, production-ready technical specifications. Your primary goal is to ensure that every piece of furniture we produce is aesthetically aligned with our brand, structurally sound, cost-effective, and manufacturable at scale.
Core Responsibilities
Design Translation:
Collaborate with creative designers to interpret sketches and design briefs, converting them into precise 2D/3D technical drawings and CAD models.
- Technical Documentation: Produce comprehensive production packages, including dimensioned elevations, sections, assembly details, and bill of materials (BOM).
- Feasibility & Engineering: Analyze designs for structural integrity, material optimization, and manufacturing efficiency. Identify potential production bottlenecks or assembly issues early in the development cycle.
- Prototyping & Quality Control: Oversee the fabrication of prototypes. Test for comfort, durability, and functionality. Document necessary design adjustments post-prototyping to ensure final production units meet Staxs high-quality standards.
- Collaboration: Act as the technical point of contact for manufacturers, vendors, and internal project managers. Provide clear, actionable feedback to ensure design intent is maintained during the production process.
- Compliance:Ensure all furniture designs comply with relevant safety regulations, ergonomic standards, and industry codes.
Key Requirements
- Experience: 3+ years of experience in furniture design, industrial design, or technical joinery/cabinetry.
- Technical Proficiency: Mastery of CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Rhino, or SketchUp). Experience with CAM software is a plus.
- Material Knowledge: Deep understanding of furniture materials, including various wood species, metalwork, upholstery, panels, and composite materials.
- Manufacturing Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of furniture manufacturing techniques, joinery, and assembly processes.
- Analytical Skills: Strong attention to detail with the ability to foresee manufacturing challenges and provide creative engineering solutions.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration with designers and factory teams.
Tips for Customization
- Software Specifics: If Stax uses a specific software stack (e.g., Fusion 360 vs. SolidWorks), update the Technical Proficiency section to reflect your preferred tools.
- Company Culture: Add a section on "Why Join Stax?" to highlight your company's specific mission, sustainability goals, or unique design philosophy.
- Leveling: If you are hiring for a Senior role, emphasize the need for "Vendor Management" and "Mentorship of junior designers."
