Role Description
We are seeking an experienced and commercially aware Chartered Structural Engineer to lead and coordinate the full design function across a multifaceted precast concrete business. The successful candidate will take ownership of structural engineering delivery, design management, technical compliance, and multidisciplinary coordination across a diverse portfolio of precast and associated construction systems.
This is a senior leadership role requiring strong technical expertise in reinforced and prestressed concrete design, exceptional knowledge of Eurocodes, and the ability to lead design teams from concept through manufacture, erection, and project completion.
The role combines engineering leadership, client engagement, regulatory compliance, and strategic technical oversight to support continued growth and innovation within the business.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Management
Lead and manage the structural design department across multiple precast concrete product lines and projects.
Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams including structural engineers, CAD/BIM technicians, temporary works designers, manufacturing teams, and external consultants.
Oversee project delivery from feasibility and tender stages through detailed design, production, installation, and final completion.
Establish and maintain robust design procedures, quality assurance systems, and technical standards.
Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff.
Structural Engineering
Deliver safe, efficient, and economical structural designs for precast concrete systems including:
Structural frames
Wall panels
Hollowcore slabs
Stairs and landings
Bridge elements
Retaining systems
Bespoke precast solutions
Review and approve structural calculations, connection details, reinforcement detailing, and erection methodologies.
Ensure all designs comply with relevant Eurocodes, National Annexes, and applicable standards.
Provide technical leadership on reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel interfaces, and temporary stability requirements.
Eurocode Compliance & Technical Governance
Maintain expert-level working knowledge of:
Eurocode 0 Basis of Structural Design
Eurocode 1 Actions on Structures
Eurocode 2 Design of Concrete Structures
Eurocode 3 Design of Steel Structures
Eurocode 7 Geotechnical Design
Eurocode 8 Seismic Design (where applicable)
Ensure compliance with all relevant European construction regulations and standards.
Lead internal technical reviews and sign-off procedures.
Act as the primary technical authority for structural compliance and risk management.
Client & Project Coordination
Liaise directly with architects, consulting engineers, contractors, developers, and regulatory authorities.
Attend design team meetings and provide technical solutions to complex engineering challenges.
Support commercial and estimating teams during tender submissions and value engineering exercises.
Build and maintain strong client relationships through technical excellence and responsive project leadership.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
Drive innovation in precast systems, manufacturing efficiencies, and digital engineering workflows.
Promote the use of BIM, parametric modelling, and modern design technologies.
Identify opportunities for standardisation, cost reduction, and improved constructability.
Qualifications
Chartered Engineer status (CEng, MIStructE, MIEI, or equivalent).
Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Minimum 810 years structural engineering experience, with significant exposure to precast concrete design.
Demonstrated experience leading engineering/design teams on complex construction projects.
Expert knowledge of Eurocodes and structural design standards.
Strong understanding of reinforced and prestressed concrete behaviour and detailing.
Experience with structural analysis and design software.
Excellent communication, leadership, and project coordination skills.
Strong commercial awareness and problem-solving ability.
