Position Overview
74Software is looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to lead the end-to-end payroll cycle for India-based employees across SBS and Axway entities.
This standalone, hands-on role is critical in ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing within a complex multi-state environment. The role operates within a Workday HCM environment and requires close coordination with the outsourced payroll provider to manage integrations, data quality, and service delivery.
The successful candidate will ensure that employees are paid accurately, on time, and in full compliance with Indian statutory requirements, supported by strong internal controls, robust reporting, audit readiness, and excellent employee support.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in Indian payroll regulations and tax compliance, along with hands-on experience working with payroll systems (such as ADP, Ramco, or similar platforms), and demonstrates the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
This is a full time, permanent position based in India. This role reports to the Global Payroll Manager and partners closely with HR and Finance teams
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Operations
- Own the end to end monthly payroll cycle including pre-payroll inputs, validation and approvals, and post-payroll reconciliation
- Process regular salary, variable pay, bonuses, incentives, arrears, retro adjustments, one-time payments, and authorised deductions
- Manage full and final settlements for leavers, including gratuity, leave encashment, and other separation-related calculations
- Execute off-cycle and emergency payrolls as needed
- Prepare and validate bank transfer files (NEFT/RTGS/IMPS), ensuring accuracy of employee bank details before salary disbursement
- Perform payroll variance analysis against prior periods, identifying and explaining key drivers such as headcount changes, salary increases, bonuses, and one-off items
Vendor & Integration Management
- Primary operational contact with the managed payroll vendor managing SLAs, escalations, and service governance
- Oversee Workday to payroll integration, ensuring accurate data flow for Employee master data, compensation updates and orgainisational changes
- Reconcile inbound data from Workday to payroll processing inputs; flag and resolve discrepancies before payroll finalisation
- Manage payroll cut-offs, exception and late-changes
Statutory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all Indian payroll statutory regulations, including but not limited to:
- Income Tax / TDS on salary monthly deposit by 7th; quarterly filing of Form 24Q; annual Form 16 issuance.
- Provident Fund (EPF, EPS, EDLI) deposit and ECR filing by 15th of each month.
- Employee State Insurance (ESIC) deposit and monthly return by 15th, where applicable.
- Professional Tax deduction and remittance per state-specific rules.
- Labour Welfare Fund contributions per applicable state legislation.
- Gratuity accrual calculations and payment on separation after qualifying service.
- Statutory Bonus where applicable under the Payment of Bonus Act.
- Stay current with multi-state compliance requirements, managing state-specific Professional Tax, LWF, and Shops & Establishments obligations across all Indian locations.
- Monitor and implement changes arising from new or amended legislation (e.g., New Income Tax Act 2025 effective April 2026, Wage Code implications on salary structures).
Reporting, Controls & Audit
- Prepare pre-payroll and post-payroll reports, variance reports, exception reports, and reconciliation packs.
- Perform general ledger and bank reconciliation maintain accuracy post-payroll.
- Support internal and external audits with documentation, evidence packs, and query resolution.
- Maintain strong internal controls, segregation of duties and payroll data security controls in line with company policy.
Employee & Stakeholder Support
- Manage employee payroll queries related to salary, deductions, tax declarations, investment proofs, payslips with professionalism and within agreed response times.
- Collaborate with HR, Finance, and Accounting teams on payroll-related data, reporting, and process improvements.
- Support the annual tax declaration cycle and year-end proof collection process.
- Contribute to payroll process documentation, SOPs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Finance, Accounting, HR, or a related discipline
- 10-14 years of hands-on Indian payroll experience, ideally within a multi-state, multi-entity environment
- Strong working knowledge of Indian statutory payroll compliance PF, ESIC, TDS, Professional Tax, LWF, Gratuity, and the Wage Code
- Experience working with outsourced/managed payroll vendors (e.g., Ascent, ADP, Ramco, or similar)
- Working knowledge of Workday HCM (data flows, integrations preferred). Workday certification or configuration experience is a strong advantage
- Proficiency with payroll software, MS Excel (advanced), and reporting tools
- Excellent attention to detail, strong numerical accuracy, and the ability to work to tight monthly deadlines
Desirable
- Experience with payroll integrations (PECI/PICOF, EIB, or equivalent connectors between Workday and payroll platforms)
- Knowledge of the New Labour Codes and their impact on salary structuring and payroll processing
- Prior experience in a global or shared-services payroll environment
- Familiarity with Shops & Establishments compliance across multiple Indian states
Key Skills & Competencies
- High level of discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive payroll data
- Strong problem-solving skills ability to investigate and resolve complex payroll discrepancies
- Proactive, self-directed, and able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent communication skills comfortable engaging with employees, HR, Finance, and external vendors
