Database Architect

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced DatabaseAdministrator (DBA) with strong expertise in Azure SQL and SQL Server to manageand optimize the data layer for enterprise web applications. The ideal candidate will be responsible for end-to-end database ownership, including schema design,migration management, performance optimization, indexing strategies, security compliance, and batch pipeline support.

This role requires close collaboration with backend engineers, data engineers, and product stakeholders to ensure scalable, secure, and high-performing database systems that support both transactional and reporting workloads.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Schema Design& Database Architecture

• Design and maintain scalable database schemas supporting both OLTP workloads and analytical/reporting workloads.
• Develop optimized structures for time-series compliance and reporting data, enabling efficient range-based querying.
• Implement snapshot and fact-table patterns to support dashboard reporting and trend analysis.
• Ensure schema extensibility for future AI/LLM-based quality scoring implementations, including semi-structured data handling using JSON or normalized models.
• Build scalable data models for clinician, site, compliance, and document-related analytics.

Migration Management

• Develop and maintain immutable sequential migration scripts using DbUp.
• Ensure migration consistency and idempotent deployments across development, staging, and production environments.
• Maintain clean migration history and version control best practices.
• Performance Optimization & Indexing
• Design and optimize indexes for high-volume dashboard and reporting queries. Define and implement partitioning strategies for large append-heavy tables.
• Write and optimize stored procedures, views, and database objects supporting API and reporting layers. Monitor and improve database performance, scalability, and query efficiency.

Batch Pipeline & Data Processing Support

• Design schemas supporting idempotent batch processing and upsert mechanisms.
• Implement watermarking and checkpoint/run-tracking tables for reliable pipeline recovery and resumability. Collaborate with data engineering teams to validate schema conformity and batch output integrity.
• Support efficient ETL and reporting workflows.

Compliance & Security

• Ensure HIPAA-compliant database design and PHI data protection practices.
• Implement encryption at rest, access controls, and audit logging mechanisms. Design audit trail tables capturing data changes, timestamps, and user activity.
• Enforce minimum-necessary data exposure principles across applications and reporting systems.

Required Skills:

• 10+ years of hands-on DBA or Data Engineering experience with Azure SQL / SQL Server.
• Strong expertise in schema design for mixed transactional and reporting workloads.
• Experience with dimensional modeling, fact tables, and snapshot architectures.
• Strong understanding of indexing strategies, partitioning, and query optimization.
• Expertise in stored procedures, views, and database performance tuning.
• Experience with immutable migration frameworks such as DbUp or Flyway.
• Strong knowledge of idempotent batch processing and data pipeline architecture.
• Hands-on experience handling semi-structured JSON data within relational databases.
