This is a generalist backend engineering role on a product squad, not an infrastructure specialization. The AI Chat squad integrates large language model APIs, builds conversation management and safety features, and delivers backend services consumed by Securly's web and mobile clients. The ideal candidate is a strong full-stack or backend engineer comfortable working with LLM APIs and Python or Node.js services, who can operate autonomously on an established squad without a long ramp.

What You'll Do

• Maintain and extend AI Chat backend services conversation management, session state, content safety filtering, and LLM API integration
• Implement and iterate on safety and appropriateness features for student-facing AI interactions (age-appropriate response filtering, flagging, administrator controls)
• Build and maintain REST/GraphQL APIs consumed by Securly's web and mobile clients
• Work within the squad's existing CI/CD pipeline; write tests and participate in code review
• Diagnose and resolve production incidents on the AI Chat services
• Collaborate with product and design on feature development within sprint cycles

Skills & Requirements

Required

• Python or Node.js production-level backend development. The squad's services are Python and/or Node; must be proficient in at least one.

• LLM API integration practical experience integrating OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or equivalent APIs; prompt engineering, streaming responses, token management, and cost awareness.

• REST API design and implementation building and maintaining APIs consumed by web and mobile clients.

• SQL / relational databases query writing, schema design, performance awareness.

• Cloud platform experience (AWS or GCP) services are deployed on cloud infrastructure; must be self-sufficient in a cloud environment.

Strongly Preferred

• Content safety and moderation patterns experience building age-appropriate or safe-for-work content filtering, especially for user-facing AI features.

• Conversation state management session handling, context window management, multi-turn conversation architecture.

• Testing and CI/CD automated testing for AI-integrated services, quality gates, deployment pipelines.

Nice to Have

• K-12 EdTech or digital wellness domain experience CIPA compliance, FERPA, student data privacy regulations.

• TypeScript / React ability to contribute to front-end components is useful but not primary.

• Vector databases or RAG patterns retrieval-augmented generation experience is a bonus as the product evolves.

The L5 Standard

All Bedrock positions are L5 minimum. That means: no routine mistakes in code, architecture, or QA. Professional-level output across the board. Able to operate independently on complex, ambiguous problems without constant oversight. If you need hand-holding on the core technical requirements listed above, this is not the right role.
