Why We're Leaving San Francisco: Quality of Life, Lockdowns, and School Challenges
As a Silicon Valley resident, I'm sharing my decision to leave San Francisco and explore new options due to the challenges of living there with a baby during the pandemic.
- 1. The speaker, "Silicon Valley Girl," and her husband, Marino, are considering moving out of San Francisco.
- 2. They have been living in San Francisco since 2016, after raising money from Silicon Valley investors and obtaining visas.
- 3. They initially moved to an apartment in the SoMa neighborhood with high-quality amenities and a community of entrepreneurs and investors.
- 4. However, due to the city's lockdown measures, they are unable to use the common areas or amenities, yet still have to pay full rent.
- 5. The speaker mentions that it is not a good time to fundraise because investors are not taking in-person meetings.
- 6. Another reason for considering moving is that they recently had a baby and are concerned about finding a good school in San Francisco.
- 7. The speaker has researched schools and found that it is difficult to find a modern apartment in a neighborhood with good schools for a reasonable price.
- 8. Private schools in San Francisco cost around $30,000 per year.
- 9. The speaker feels that walking with a baby in the city would be challenging due to crowded areas and unsafe streets.
- 10. The speaker's husband prefers living in San Francisco because of the networking opportunities it offers for their business.
- 11. He believes that if they were to work as an Uber driver or bartender, living in the city would not be worth the high cost of living.
- 12. However, the speaker is more concerned about safety and finding a community of mothers in their neighborhood.
- 13. She mentions that they previously lived in Mountain View for six months but found it boring.
- 14. The speaker's husband is originally from St. Petersburg and thinks that San Francisco is a safer version of the city.
- 15. They are considering traveling during the summer to discover new places to live.
- 16. Finding affordable housing in Silicon Valley or San Francisco will be challenging, especially after their current lease expires.
- 17. Many of their friends are also taking advantage of the lower prices of vacation rental homes and traveling with their families.
- 18. The speaker believes that more companies will realize that employees can work remotely with the same level of productivity, reducing the need for expensive office spaces.
- 19. Linguae Trip, a company they know, started as a remote company four years ago and has found it easier to hire talented people from different cities and countries.
- 20. The speaker thinks that more people will work remotely in the future, but also believes that people have short memories and may forget about the current crisis in a few months.
- 21. She encourages viewers to comment on where they moved out of San Francisco if they have done so.
- 22. They are still deciding where to move and hope to find a place with a sense of community and safety for their family.
- 23. The speaker thanks viewers for watching the video until the end and being subscribed to her channel.
- 24. She hopes that her channel will continue to inspire and inform viewers about Silicon Valley and its culture.
